Dress watches

Thin case, restrained dial, leather strap, time-only or sub-seconds at most. The dress watch is the formal-wear of the catalog and the deepest expression of haute horlogerie.

The dress watch is built for the wrist under a shirt cuff: slim profile, leather strap, no bezel complication, time and date at most. The practical specification is a case under 40mm in diameter, a lug-to-lug that clears a 6-inch wrist under formal wear, and a case thickness below 10mm, the tighter the thickness target, the harder the engineering challenge. Dial material is typically guilloché or lacquer on gold cases, with applied or printed markers rather than luminous indices, and hands in blued steel or gold.

What to look for

Lug-to-lug measurement is the critical dimension that dress-watch photography almost never gives you. A 38mm case on short lugs wears smaller than a 38mm case on long swept lugs, the IWC Portofino's 40mm case wears large; the Patek Calatrava 3919's 33mm case wears balanced. The second decision is precious metal vs. steel. Steel dress watches (Nomos Tangente, Longines Master Collection) are undervalued relative to gold-cased equivalents and often just as well-made at the entry level. Precious metal is a hedge and a statement; steel is a daily object.
