A watch on a steel bracelet with a rotating bezel, described as an Octa or as an "Octa S"

• A steel bracelet or a steel case -- F.P. Journe has not offered an Octa on a steel bracelet, and no Octa reference is cased in steel
• A rotating bezel -- the Octa family does not use one, and the AR bezel is fixed
• An "Octa S" or "Octa Sport" designation on the dial, caseback or paperwork -- F.P. Journe has no model by that name
• No offset power reserve disc in the upper dial sector, which every Octa Automatique carries

Journe's sports line is the lineSport, not the Octa. The lineSport Chronographe Monopoussoir Rattrapante (CMS) is titanium and runs Cal. 1518, a different case and movement family from the Octa entirely. Journe case metals are gold, platinum, tantalum and titanium, so steel in the case or bracelet is on its own enough to say the watch is not the reference the description names.

Octa RDM movement (Cal. 1300 with platinum micro-rotor) fitted in AR case

• Grey-white platinum micro-rotor instead of the warm gold micro-rotor of the AR
• Power reserve disc graduating to 5 days rather than 40 hours

Both the RDM and AR use micro-rotors and gold movement plates. The rotor material color and power reserve scale are the primary differentiators.

Original: 18k gold micro-rotor integrated at movement plate level. Visible through the caseback as a small, dense, yellow or rose-toned semicircle. Distinctly different from the platinum micro-rotor in the Octa RDM (which is grey-white) -- the Automatique rotor is warm gold in color.

• Grey-white micro-rotor in warm-gold case -- this indicates a platinum rotor from an RDM movement was fitted
• Full conventional oscillating rotor visible through caseback instead of the micro-rotor
• No rotor visible at all -- any AR Automatique without a micro-rotor has the wrong movement

Original: 18k rose gold plates and bridges throughout, the same standard as all FPJ calibers. Manual-wind with an automatic winding module adding the micro-rotor. Power reserve 40+ hours. The "F.P. Journe Invenit et Fecit" signature is engraved on the movement bridges.

• Movement plates without gold coloring -- any silver, grey, or nickel-silver plates are disqualifying
• No "F.P. Journe Invenit et Fecit" inscription on the bridges
• Machine marks or polishing residue on bridge surfaces -- FPJ factory finishing is hand-beveled on each bridge
• Power reserve indicator reading more than 5 days -- the AR is a 40-hour reserve, not the 120-hour RDM

Original: Single push-pull crown at 3. The Octa Automatique uses automatic winding; the crown serves for time and date setting. Pull once to advance the date; pull twice to set the time.

• Crown with any screw-down mechanism -- the AR does not have a screw-down crown
• Crown without the small FPJ engraving on the crown face
