Rubber-strap watches

Rubber straps have moved up-market from their tool-watch origin. Once relegated to diver and chronograph use, modern rubber straps appear on references like the Patek Philippe Aquanaut (the canonical luxury rubber-strap watch since 1997), the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore, and the Hublot Big Bang collection. The material has improved dramatically — vulcanized rubber, FKM (fluoroelastomer), and texturized rubber compounds resist degradation, do not retain skin oils, and hold up to sun exposure better than the rubber straps of the 1990s.
What to look for
The Patek Aquanaut 5167A's tropical-pattern strap is the reference grade — molded from a proprietary compound and the only luxury rubber strap that has maintained its visual identity for 25+ years. Hublot's structured rubber and Audemars Piguet's smooth rubber on the Royal Oak Offshore Diver represent the upper tier. The question for buyers is feel — rubber straps feel "less expensive" to many first-time wearers, regardless of the watch's price tag. If you are buying a $30k Aquanaut, the rubber is the point; if you are unsure, try a leather alternative on the same case.
