The Legend Diver 36mm is Longines' faithful recreation of its 1960 skin-diver, built around the unusual period feature of an inner rotating bezel controlled by the crown rather than an external rider ring. At 36mm it sits genuinely small on the wrist, which is the point: this is a historically proportioned dive watch for collectors who find modern 42mm divers cartoonish. The L807.24 automatic keeps it honest as an everyday wearer at a price that doesn't require a second mortgage.
Longines introduced the Legend Diver line in 2007 as a direct homage to its ref. 7042 skin-diver from 1960, which carried an internal bezel controlled through the crown to avoid maritime regulation conflicts with external bezels at the time. The current 36mm reference L3.374.4.96.6 with black dial and steel bracelet entered production in 2023 as part of a size rationalization that trimmed earlier 38mm and 42mm variants. Earlier Legend Divers used different movements including the A068/1 ETA base; the 2023 generation standardizes on the in-house L807.24.
Dial variants in the current run include black and dark green, with leather strap and steel bracelet configurations. No ceramic or precious-metal variants exist in the current lineup.
The inner bezel mechanism is the first thing to check: rotate it through a full 360 degrees via the crown and confirm smooth, positive graduation without slipping or grinding. The crown is also the only control for the bezel, so worn crown threads will affect both timekeeping and bezel function simultaneously. Inspect the acrylic-style domed crystal for scratches; it polishes out but some sellers neglect this on otherwise clean examples.
On pre-2023 examples with the ETA-based movement, confirm whether the movement has been swapped or modified, as early service records sometimes show non-Longines parts. The bracelet clasp on steel-bracelet examples has a reputation for modest build quality relative to the case; check for side-play and confirm the diver's extension functions correctly.
The 36mm Legend Diver holds value steadily but does not appreciate meaningfully on the secondary market; retail pricing around $2,200 to $2,600 USD is close to what the grey market trades at. The dark green dial variant trades at a modest premium of roughly $100 to $200 over black due to lower production allocation. Earlier 38mm examples in excellent condition with box and papers occasionally trade slightly above their original retail because that size has been discontinued.
This is a buyer's market: patient shoppers find clean examples with full kit at or below retail.
The L807.24 is a Longines in-house caliber with a recommended service interval of approximately 5 years, though many collectors stretch to 7 to 8 years with clean running examples. Longines Official Service runs approximately $400 to $600 USD depending on region and whether parts replacement is required. The movement is not independently serviced by most third-party watchmakers, so factor authorized service center availability into the purchase if you are not near a Longines service point.

The inner rotating bezel operated by the crown at 3 is both distinctive and the hardest detail to replicate accurately.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| crown | Crown at 3 operates inner rotating bezel | Crown at 3 when pulled out rotates the inner bezel ring (inside the dial); rotation is smooth with positive indexing; bezel ring shows minute graduations for dive timing | Crown at 3 that does not rotate the inner bezel; inner bezel that is fixed; any watch claiming this reference where both crowns are on the same side |
| crown | Crown at 9 for winding and time setting | Crown at 9 winds the movement and sets time and date; positioned on the left side of the case at 9 o'clock; push-pull operation | Crown at 9 that is decorative; winding crown on the right side (would indicate a different model) |
| case | Cushion case shape | Case has softened corners giving a cushion silhouette; case diameter approximately 42mm; brushed surfaces with polished case sides | Round case without the cushion shape; excessively angular case corners; case diameter significantly different from 42mm |
| dial | Sword hands and vintage-style markers | Sword-style hands with lume strips; applied indices at hour positions; vintage color palette (cream or white lume on navy dial); "LONGINES" and "LEGEND DIVER" text crisp | Modern-style hands inconsistent with heritage design; printed rather than applied indices; lume that is uneven or missing |
| caseback | Caseback with movement identification | Caseback engraved with model text and water resistance rating; exhibition caseback (if present) shows ETA automatic movement base; Longines reference engraved | Reference absent from caseback; movement architecture inconsistent with ETA automatic base |
