Authentication

Counterfeit dials are the primary risk; color and text precision are the tell.

Known issues in the market
  • Counterfeit Max Bill dials exist with off-color lacquer; compare under identical lighting.
  • Applied indices can lift if the watch has been exposed to moisture.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Max Bill Automatic is the most recognizable Junghans piece. The Bauhaus design language demands absolute dial restraint: no extraneous text, no date window on the no-date variant, and a printed "Max Bill" inscription at 12 that is the single most important authenticity marker.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Max Bill replicas exist, targeting the Bauhaus minimalism appeal. The dial text precision and case finishing are the primary tells.

  • "max bill" text appears in a different typeface or capitalization
  • Lume applied to markers or hands
  • Chapter ring printing is thicker or bolder than the original hairline
  • Case finishing has rough edges at the lug-case junction

The Max Bill is not a high-value target, but its popularity with design-conscious buyers makes it an occasional replica victim.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1961 to presentSilver or white lacquer dial. "JUNGHANS" printed at 12, "max bill" in a smaller lowercase typeface directly below. Thin minute track around the chapter ring. Applied rectangular hour markers with no lume. Leaf-shaped or simple baton hands.
  • "max bill" text in lowercase is the canonical dial inscription
  • No lume on markers or hands; any lume is not original to the Max Bill line
  • Thin printed chapter ring with minute marks only, no hour indices outside the markers
  • Dial edge is flush with the flat bezel with no visible gap
  • On the date variant, the date window is at 3 with no surround ring

Service part flags

Dial

Original: Printed-only dial: "JUNGHANS" and "max bill" text is the only inscription. No additional text. No "AUTOMATIC," no "SWISS MADE" on dial face (the "Swiss Made" marking appears on the caseback only).

Replacement tells
  • Any "AUTOMATIC" text on the dial is not original
  • "SWISS MADE" text on the dial face is not original (it belongs on the caseback)
  • Any text beyond "JUNGHANS" and "max bill" is incorrect
  • Printed indices instead of applied rectangular markers
Case

Original: 38mm round stainless steel case with a flat bezel. The bezel sits flush with the crystal and has no steps or angles. The lugs are straight and thin.

Replacement tells
  • A domed bezel or angled bezel edge is not the Max Bill case shape
  • Case diameter measuring more than 38.5mm suggests a different model or incorrect case

Case back markings

toggle
1961 to present
  • "JUNGHANS" and the Junghans star logo engraved on caseback
  • Caliber designation engraved: "CAL. J800.1" or similar
  • Reference number (027/3501.04 for the current auto)
  • "SCHRAMBERG/GERMANY" manufacturing origin

Movement tells

toggle
  • The J800.1 is an ETA 2824-2 base with Junghans finishing. It beats at 28,800bph. A movement visibly beating slower is not the correct caliber.
  • Power reserve is 38 hours, shorter than the 42-hour ETA 2824-2 standard due to Junghans rotor configuration. Verify the watch does not stop before 36 hours from full wind.
  • The caliber engraved on the caseback must match the movement visible through any inspection port. J800.1 corresponds to the 2824-2 base; J815.1 is the manual-wind Peseux 7001 base (a different reference).
