Titanium watches

References in the Grail Atlas catalog with a titanium case.

Titanium is roughly 40% lighter than steel for the same volume, hypoallergenic, and effectively corrosion-proof. Watches use either Grade 2 (commercially pure, softer, more colour variation) or Grade 5 (titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloy, harder, more scratch-resistant). The trade is scratch resistance — even Grade 5 titanium scratches more visibly than steel — against weight and skin compatibility.

What to look for

The Citizen Promaster line and Seiko's Marinemaster MM300 SBDX011 brought titanium to the diver category at scale. Omega's Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep 215.90.46.21.06.001 and the Tudor Pelagos 25600TN are the modern titanium dive watches that get cross-shopped. Grand Seiko's SBGA series and IWC's Big Pilot Titanium are the dressier executions. Panerai uses titanium extensively in the Luminor Marina line. The biggest decision is whether you want bead-blasted (matte grey, hides scratches) or polished (catches light, scratches more visibly) finishing. Titanium is the material that rewards wearing — owners report forgetting they have a watch on, which is either the appeal or the disqualifier.
