Authentication
The Simplicity is a three-hand dress watch from Philippe Dufour, made largely by hand in the Vallee de Joux. Fewer than 200 exist. Authentication centers on movement finishing quality, which is unmatched; any example that feels less than extraordinary under a loupe should prompt expert review.
- Extremely limited production means any example for sale deserves documented provenance and auction or dealer history.
- There are no known direct counterfeits of the Simplicity at the level that could deceive an expert; misrepresentation of condition or originality is the primary risk.
- Dial printing is done to museum-quality standards; any imperfection in the "PHILIPPE DUFOUR" and "GENEVE" text is a strong indicator of a problem.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| movement | Anglage on every bridge edge | Hand-cut chamfer on every visible edge; chamfers are consistent, crisp, and reflect light uniformly under a loupe; this is the definitive tell: no factory can replicate it | Soft or rounded chamfer edges; inconsistent width along a single bridge edge; visible grinding marks |
| movement | Surface finish quality | Perlage (circular graining) on plates is perfectly regular; straight-grained brushing on bridges runs without wavering; no swirl or machine-finish marks | Irregular perlage; any wavering in straight-grained surfaces; visible machine finish |
| dial | Dial text precision: "PHILIPPE DUFOUR" and "GENEVE" | Text is printed with perfect letter spacing and consistent ink weight; letters do not vary under magnification | Any uneven spacing, inconsistent stroke weight, or blurring under a 5x loupe |
| dial | Dial construction (guilloché or enamel) | Engine-turned guilloché shows mechanical hatching with faceted texture under a loupe; enamel dials have depth and translucency impossible to fake by printing | Printed or photographed texture on a claimed guilloché or enamel dial; flat, uniform appearance under magnification |
| case | Case hallmarks and metal purity | Gold or platinum case carries correct purity marks for the country of sale; case weight consistent with declared metal | Missing or inconsistent hallmarks; case weight inconsistent with declared metal |
- Strap replacement is common on older examples; original Dufour-fitted straps are rarely available, so any strap is plausible.
Authentication guide
Philippe Dufour makes perhaps 5 to 10 watches per year personally. The Simplicity is a three-hand piece in yellow or white gold. The movement anglage sets the reference standard for the entire craft. Provenance and auction records are the only practical authentication tools.
