Price trend chart coming soon

Steel Daytona supply is tightly controlled by Rolex authorized dealers, so secondary market prices remain well above the roughly $14,550 retail price with no sign of convergence.

Editorial estimate, 2026 Q2. Actual prices vary by condition, date, and box/papers status.

Medium-large: suits wrists 6.5 in+ (16.5 cm+)
40 mm case. Wears confidently on average to larger wrists. May overhang on slender builds.

The 116500LN is the most-requested current Rolex reference at retail and attracts a very active replica market. Super clones targeting this reference are among the highest-quality fakes in circulation.

Known issues in the market
  • Super clone replicas of the 116500LN using modified ETA or Miyota movements with cloned Cal. 4130 casework are widely available.
  • The white-dial variant (116500LW) commands a premium and is more frequently misrepresented.
  • Bracelet and clasp replacements are common; some legitimate service replacements are mistaken for fakes.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Pushers are replaced after denting or wear; confirm correct type and crown markings.
  • Crystal is occasionally replaced; sapphire with cyclops on this model, no date magnifier needed.
  • Bracelet end links are a commonly replaced part and should match production era.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 116500LN is the most-demanded current Rolex at retail and carries a very active super-clone market. The Cal. 4130 column-wheel chronograph and the monobloc ceramic bezel are the primary verification targets. For vintage Daytona buyers: the "Paul Newman" dial designation (art-deco sub-register typeface, square register outlines, decorative ring between chapter ring and dial field) refers exclusively to exotic dials on the manual-wind references (ref. 6239, 6241, 6263, 6265) from the late 1960s through mid-1970s. The 116500LN is a modern automatic reference and no genuine Paul Newman variant exists for it.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Top-tier super clone replicas with modified ETA 7750 or Miyota movements with cloned Cal. 4130 casework. These are among the most convincing fakes available.

  • Sub-register printing that is slightly fuzzy or where the track lines bleed into the dial background at 10x magnification
  • Flat matte finish on the white dial instead of the correct sunburst finish (catches light and shifts at different angles)
  • "Cosmograph Daytona" text spacing or font weight that is off from known originals
  • Bezel ceramic that has any visible seam or join line (genuine monobloc has none)
  • Caseback locking ring orientation that does not match factory standard

At this price tier, professional authentication before purchase is the standard for informed buyers.

MEDIUM

Period-correct cases with non-original movements from other Daytona generations.

  • Cam-actuated pusher feel (heavy, decisive snap rather than light column-wheel activation)
  • Seconds-hand jump at chronograph start instead of smooth departure

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2016 to present (black dial)"Panda" configuration -- black dial with white sub-registers.
  • Black dial with white chronograph registers at 3, 6, and 9
  • Gold applied hour markers and gold Daytona text
  • Black tachymeter bezel
  • "Cosmograph" in smaller text immediately below the 12 o'clock position, "Daytona" in larger text below
  • Sub-register sizes are precisely proportioned: the 30-minute counter at 3 and 12-hour counter at 9 are larger than the small-seconds at 6. Replicas often have incorrect sub-register sizing relative to each other or relative to the 40mm case diameter.
2016 to present (white dial)"Reverse panda" configuration -- white dial with black sub-registers.
  • White sunburst dial with black chronograph registers
  • Gold applied hour markers and gold text throughout
  • Commands higher secondary market premium than the black dial variant
  • Sub-register print contrast is sharper against the white background than it appears in photos

Service part flags

toggle
Pushers

Original: Two pump pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock. Upper pusher starts/resets; lower stops. Firm and consistent resistance with a definite snap feel at activation.

Replacement tells
  • Spongy or inconsistent pusher feel -- indicates worn springs or incorrect replacement pushers
  • Both pushers producing the same action (both start/stop or both reset)
  • Pusher tubes with visible corrosion or incorrect finish compared to the case
Bezel insert

Original: Monobloc Cerachrom ceramic in black. PVD-filled tachymeter numerals in gold sit flush with the ceramic surface. The ceramic is extremely scratch-resistant.

Replacement tells
  • Tachymeter numerals that sit proud of the ceramic surface (PVD build-up from aftermarket refinishing)
  • Aluminum insert from a prior Daytona generation
  • Bezel-to-case junction with any visible gap or raised edge
Bracelet clasp

Original: Oysterlock clasp with Rolex text and Oystersteel engraving on inner face. Fine-adjustment positions. Diver extension fold-over.

Replacement tells
  • Absence of Oystersteel text on clasp interior
  • Fine-adjustment ratchet that does not click into discrete positions
  • Diver extension that cannot be released without tools

Case back markings

toggle
2016 to present
  • Solid caseback engraved: ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER COSMOGRAPH
  • Serial number engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock
  • Reference 116500LN on the rehaut at 12 o'clock
  • Caseback locking ring orientation: the ring has a specific tightening direction; incorrect orientation suggests third-party caseback work
  • Service sticker from a Rolex service center may be visible inside the caseback if recently serviced

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 4130 is a column-wheel chronograph with vertical clutch. The seconds hand starts instantly with no jump at activation -- this is a key functional tell.
  • Genuine Cal. 4130 at full wind holds 72 hours of power reserve. Drain it and time from full wind to stop.
  • Column-wheel chronographs have a different pusher feel from cam-actuated designs: the activation is light and smooth, not heavy. A heavy, clunky pusher feel suggests a cam-actuated movement.
  • The lateral-clutch design (used in ETA-based fakes) produces a brief seconds-hand jump when the chronograph is started. The vertical clutch in the genuine 4130 does not.
  • Rolex Daytona service documentation from an authorized center specifies Cal. 4130. A service card mentioning ETA, Miyota, or any other base is an immediate concern.
