Authentication

A discontinued platinum perpetual calendar is bought on condition and completeness rather than on the risk of a fake, and the outsize date is the part that most rewards a close look.

Known issues in the market
  • The main corrector at 10 o'clock advances every calendar display together. Using the individual correctors out of sequence, or correcting during the midnight changeover, is how these get damaged.
  • Platinum shows handling marks readily and polishes away quickly. A case with soft, rounded edges has lost material that cannot be put back.
  • Completeness matters disproportionately here: the correcting stylus, the box and the certificate are frequently missing on a watch that has changed hands several times.

movementCaliber L922.1 Sax-0-Mat and ZERO-RESETPulling the crown resets the seconds to zero instantly; the movement is finished with Glashütte ribbing and a hand-engraved balance cockSeconds that free-run with the crown out, or an engraved balance cock whose cut looks stamped and uniform
dialCalendar and moon phase coherenceDay, date, month, leap-year and moon phase all agree with each other and with the real dateIndications that cannot be reconciled by setting, which points to a calendar mechanism out of phase
Common legitimate replacements
  • Straps and buckles are routinely replaced. Confirm whether the deployant is the original Lange part, since it carries real value on a platinum watch.
  • Crystals are replaced after impact; a correct Lange sapphire sits flush with no visible bevel difference.
Expert resources: A. Lange & Söhne service can confirm the movement number against the case. Because the reference was discontinued, an independent Lange specialist is often the faster route for a condition report.
