Authentication

The "teak" dial lines are machine-engraved and must cast a shadow under raking light; any Aqua Terra 41mm with flat printed lines has a counterfeit or replaced dial.

Known issues in the market
  • Printed teak-line dials are the primary counterfeit dial type for the Aqua Terra; raking light inspection immediately separates engraved from printed.
  • The engraved lines must be uniform in depth and spacing; uneven depth indicates a non-genuine or re-engraved dial.
  • METAS certification on Cal. 8900 is mandatory; absence of the METAS caseback stamp is a disqualifying observation.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Dials on the Aqua Terra are occasionally replaced; confirm engraved line depth with raking light before purchase.
  • Integrated bracelets are a common swap; confirm Omega-signed clasp on the bracelet.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Aqua Terra's horizontal "Teak" groove pattern is distinctive and hard to reproduce well. The Co-Axial escapement inside is essentially impossible to fake at any cost. Inspect the groove depth and OMEGA crown logo sharpness first.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Counterfeit with crude movement finishing

  • OMEGA crown logo on dial has soft or blurry edges -- genuine is laser-sharp
  • Teak groove pattern has incorrect depth or irregular spacing
  • Lume plots inconsistent in color or size between hour markers
  • Any visible movement through an added display caseback will show a generic lever escapement rather than co-axial geometry

The Aqua Terra is faked in volume at the lower price points. The Teak groove pattern and OMEGA crown logo sharpness are the two fastest rejection tests.

LOW

Variant misrepresentation -- 8900 sold as 8901 COSC

  • Dial lacks "Chronometer" text on a watch sold as an 8901 certified example
  • Caseback shows 8900 when papers claim 8901

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2017 to present (cal. 8900/8901)Horizontal groove "Teak" pattern dial in blue, green, grey, silver, and seasonal colorways. The grooves have a specific depth and spacing that reads as a wood-grain texture from a distance but is clearly geometric under magnification. Cal. 8901 examples are COSC certified and carry "Chronometer" on the dial; cal. 8900 examples do not.
  • Horizontal groove pattern with correct depth -- shallow or wide grooves indicate a reproduction
  • "Chronometer" text on 8901 variants only -- absence on an 8901 is a red flag
  • Applied hour indices with correct finish -- polished on standard, mix of brushed and polished on some variants
  • OMEGA crown logo above 6 o'clock, crisply cut with sharp edges
  • Date window at 3 o'clock with a cyclops-free sapphire crystal -- no date magnification on the Aqua Terra
2020 to presentRefreshed Teak-pattern dial introduced with updated colorways including "Shades of Blue" and summer palette variants. Some models gained a larger date aperture and refreshed typography.
  • "Shades" series dials have a two-tone or gradient appearance within the groove pattern
  • Larger date window on some post-2020 variants compared to prior production
  • Green and teal colorways added to the standard lineup alongside the established blue and silver
  • MASTER CHRONOMETER designation present on cal. 8901 certified examples

Dial groove pattern

Original: The Teak grooves are machined or stamped into the dial with consistent depth across the full surface. The groove color and depth match the specific colorway -- blue dials have grooves in a specific shade, not a generic color. Under 5x magnification the grooves have clean sidewalls.

Replacement tells
  • Grooves too shallow, giving a flat appearance from the side rather than a distinct shadow pattern
  • Groove spacing irregular or wider than the OEM specification
  • Color of grooves inconsistent across the dial face -- originals are uniform
Case and bracelet junction

Original: The Aqua Terra uses an integrated bracelet or an attached strap system. The case-to-bracelet junction should be seamless with no visible gap or misalignment. The bracelet deployant clasp carries the OMEGA logo on the exterior face.

Replacement tells
  • Gap visible at the case-bracelet junction on integrated bracelet variants
  • OMEGA logo absent or poorly stamped on the deployant clasp exterior
  • Bracelet links not polished on correct surfaces -- brushed and polished surfaces are specific per link type
Crown

Original: Push-pull crown with gasket seal (not screw-down). The crown has correct Omega knurling and is proportional to the case. 150m water resistance is achieved via gasket compression, not mechanical screwdown.

Replacement tells
  • Crown sits proud of the case or has visible play when in the home position
  • Knurling pitch incorrect for Omega standard
  • Crown logo absent or not crisp

Case back markings

toggle
2017 to present
  • "150 M / 500 FT" water resistance designation
  • Caliber 8900 or 8901 (check which matches the dial)
  • "CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER" text on 8901 examples
  • Case reference number and serial number
  • "OMEGA" brand and "SWISS MADE" designation

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 8900/8901 uses a Co-Axial escapement with a three-level co-axial wheel stack. On display-back examples this is visible under magnification -- the distinctive geometry of the co-axial wheel is unlike any standard lever escapement. No reproduction has replicated it at the component level.
  • The Master Chronometer certification means the watch is tested against magnetic fields up to 15,000 Gauss. This is not a visible tell but the certification is documented in the box and papers -- the magnetic resistance claim without documentation is unverifiable.
  • Cal. 8900 is bidirectional winding with a free-sprung balance. Winding feel is smooth throughout; the balance should restart immediately when the crown is wound from a stopped state.
  • Power reserve is approximately 60 hours. A watch that runs dry after 24 hours has an issue with the mainspring or automatic winding system.
