Index alignment and pusher condition determine authenticity on the Chronoscope.

Known issues in the market
  • Applied indices on the Chronoscope must be precisely aligned; any tilt is a defect.
  • Chrome plating loss on pushers is a cosmetic issue but affects value.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Max Bill Chronoscope is a flyback-capable chronograph in the Max Bill aesthetic. The Valjoux 7750 base (J880.1) gives it a column-wheel automatic chronograph movement, which is a significant specification at its price. Dial restraint is the same as the 3-hand Max Bill: no extraneous text.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Chronoscope is rarely replicated. Its relatively low market value and complex flyback function make it an unattractive copy target.

  • Sub-dial printing coarser than original
  • Missing flyback function (reset requires two pushes instead of one)

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1962 to presentSilver or white dial. "JUNGHANS" at 12, "max bill" below. Three sub-dials: 30-minute counter at 3, running seconds at 9, and 12-hour counter at 6. Date window at 4-5. Day-of-week at a fourth register or combined with another counter depending on variant.
  • Sub-dials are the same size and layout as the standard Valjoux 7750 configuration (9-3-6)
  • "chronoscope" text may appear on dial below "max bill" on current production
  • No tachymeter ring; the chapter ring is a plain minute track
  • Flyback function: a single push at the 4 o'clock pusher resets and restarts without stopping

Service part flags

toggle
Pushers

Original: Two round pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock. Pusher at 2 starts/stops; pusher at 4 is the flyback reset.

Replacement tells
  • Three pushers indicates a different chronograph movement, not the J880.1
  • Rectangular pushers are not original to this model

Case back markings

toggle
1962 to present
  • "JUNGHANS" and star logo
  • "CAL. J880.1" engraved on caseback
  • Reference 027/4500.02 for current version
  • "SCHRAMBERG/GERMANY"

Movement tells

toggle
  • The J880.1 is a Valjoux 7750 base at 28,800bph. Chronograph start/stop should be clean and immediate. Hesitation or bouncing indicates worn detent parts.
  • Power reserve is 42 hours. Flyback function should reset the running chronograph hand to 12 and restart immediately with a single pusher press.
  • The 7750 architecture shows the balance wheel prominently at 9 o'clock through the caseback if there is an exhibition window. On the Chronoscope, the caseback is typically solid.
