Authentication

Vintage 1601 dial originality and appropriate aging are the primary value drivers; tropical dials require UV inspection to verify genuine aging.

Known issues in the market
  • Tropical dials (aged to brown or chocolate) command premiums; verify aging is genuine under UV light.
  • The 1601 covers a long production period; verify all components are from a consistent production era.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Vintage Datejust 1601 dials are commonly replaced; original dial is the primary value driver.
  • Jubilee bracelets on vintage 1601 references are often modern replacements; verify period-correct clasp style.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 1601 ran from 1960 to 1978 on Cal. 1570 and offered the widest range of dial configurations of any Rolex at the time. Dial authenticity is the central value question: exotic and unusual dials command significant premiums, service dial substitutions are common, and the price point does not justify sophisticated outright fakes.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Dial authenticity misrepresentation is the primary risk: standard dials presented as exotic configurations, or service dials presented as original to the watch.

  • Dial text condition dramatically better than the case and bracelet
  • Exotic dial surface (tapestry, stone, mosaic) that shows any evidence of non-factory application
  • Lume aging inconsistent with the stated production year
  • Stone dial mounted without the precise edge finishing that characterizes factory Rolex stone dial production

Service dials are not fraudulent -- they are legitimate Rolex parts -- but the collector premium for original-dial examples is substantial. The distinction matters to value and should be disclosed by any knowledgeable seller.

LOW

Outright replica 1601 watches are uncommon. The price point relative to more exotic Rolex references does not justify the manufacturing investment required for a convincing fake.

  • Case geometry and lug proportions that do not match known 1601 production
  • Movement caliber inconsistent with the stated production era

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1960 to ~1967 (gilt)Gilt dial era: gold printing on glossy black or champagne lacquer base. Gold applied markers. The most collectible dial configuration.
  • Gold-colored "Oyster Perpetual Datejust" and index text on glossy lacquer
  • Warm cream to ivory tritium lume aging consistent with early 1960s production
  • "Swiss" at 6 o'clock without "Made" suffix on earliest examples
  • Lacquer craze visible under 10x magnification on genuine aged examples
  • Applied gold baton or index markers matching the text color
~1967 to 1978 (matte and varied)Matte and diverse dial era spanning silver, champagne, black lacquer, and many specialty configurations. The 1601 had an enormous factory dial catalog during this period.
  • Silver, champagne, or black matte base depending on configuration
  • "Swiss Made" or "T Swiss T" at 6 o'clock on most examples
  • Tapestry dials: fabric-woven surface pattern applied to the dial base -- distinctive textile texture under loupe
  • Mosaic dials: checkerboard or geometric pattern, higher value than standard
  • Linen dials: fine crosshatch texture across the dial surface
  • Wood-grain dials: radial or linear grain pattern across the face
  • Exotic stone dials (various): onyx, malachite, coral, turquoise, and others command the highest premiums

Dial

Original: Original dials to the 1601 show aging consistent with the production year and storage conditions. Exotic and specialty dials (tapestry, mosaic, stone) that are genuinely original will have aging concordant with the case and movement. Rolex service centers replaced dials frequently during normal service intervals -- service dials are correct period-correct Rolex dials but are not original to the specific watch.

Replacement tells
  • Dial text that looks newer than the case finish and movement serial would suggest (too crisp, too clean for a 50+ year old watch)
  • Production date mismatch: a dial style introduced in 1972 on a case with a serial from 1965
  • Lume plots on a service dial that glow brighter or with a different color than the stated production era (service dials sometimes have later-generation lume)
  • Tapestry or mosaic pattern that shows any evidence of reapplication or surface disruption at the dial edge
  • Exotic stone dial mounted in a case where the stone selection is inconsistent with the reference's known factory options
Bezel

Original: White gold fluted bezel is standard on steel 1601 cases. The fluting runs perpendicular to the case edge and the metal should match the case-side material. Bezel teeth are fine and sharply defined on original examples.

Replacement tells
  • Bezel material that does not match the case metal (steel fluted bezel on a stated white gold bezel reference)
  • Replacement smooth bezel from a different Datejust variant
  • Bezel fluting that is worn flat at the teeth peaks due to over-polishing
  • Bezel that rotates or has any play in its seated position (should be fixed in place)
Jubilee bracelet

Original: Five-link Jubilee bracelet was standard equipment for the 1601. Original bracelets from this era are heavily prone to stretch from daily wear. Stretched Jubilee bracelets are among the most common condition issues on vintage Datejust examples.

Replacement tells
  • Jubilee bracelet with center links that show noticeable play relative to the outer links (stretched)
  • End links that do not seat flush against the case horn
  • Clasp inner stampings that postdate the watch serial by more than a few years
  • Bracelet reference incompatible with 1601 production pairings
Crown

Original: Twinlock winding crown (two-dot) appropriate for the 1601 era. Correct size for the 1570 case tube.

Replacement tells
  • Triplock crown on a 1601 (incorrect for this reference and era)
  • Crown that does not screw down or that seats without full resistance
  • Crown size inconsistent with the case tube diameter
Crystal

Original: Acrylic crystal with a Cyclops magnifier at 3 o'clock. The Cyclops provides 2.5x magnification of the date. Original acrylic crystals show fine surface scratching appropriate to age.

Replacement tells
  • Sapphire crystal on a stated original 1601 (wrong generation material)
  • Cyclops magnification that differs significantly from 2.5x (visibly weaker or stronger than expected)
  • Crystal surface completely free of scratches on a heavily worn case (replacement)

Case back markings

toggle
1960 to 1978
  • Plain caseback outer face with no engravings
  • ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL DATEJUST on the inner caseback face
  • Reference 1601 stamped between lugs at 12 o'clock
  • Serial number stamped between lugs at 6 o'clock
  • Solid steel caseback throughout the production run

Movement tells

toggle
  • The 1601 uses Cal. 1570 -- a 26-jewel automatic running at 19,800bph. The 1570 does NOT have a quickset date function; the date advances only by cycling the hands through midnight. If a quickset function is present, the movement has been swapped.
  • A correctly serviced 1570 holds rate to within +/- 10 to 15 seconds per day. Drift beyond 30 seconds suggests worn escapement components.
  • The rotor winds in both directions. A unidirectional rotor or a rotor with bearing noise indicates service need.
  • Cal. 1570 is a reliable workhorse. A movement that stops unexpectedly or has intermittent power delivery suggests a mainspring that has lost set (permanently deformed from age).
