Cal. 3135 is the pre-Chronergy benchmark; confirm the 116200 reference number on caseback and verify bezel matches documented configuration.
- The 116200 was produced with multiple bezel options; mismatched bezel and papers reduce value.
- Sellers may represent a 116200 as a newer 126200 or vice versa; reference number on caseback is definitive.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| caseback | Reference number 116200 engraved on caseback | 116200 reference number clearly engraved; Cal. 3135 movement visible through exhibition back if present | Reference number 126200 or any other variant; Cal. 3235 architecture (indicating a newer movement swap) |
| case | Bezel configuration matching papers | Bezel type (smooth, fluted, or engine-turned) matches what is recorded in original papers or invoice | Bezel type inconsistent with documented configuration; bezel replacement reduces authenticity |
| dial | Dial variant consistency with reference | Dial color and index type appropriate for a 116200; printing sharp with no reprint artifacts under loupe | Dial that does not match documented configuration in papers; any reprint visible under 5x loupe |
- Bezel swaps between smooth, fluted, and engine-turned variants are common; verify against papers.
- Cal. 3135 is sometimes upgraded to Cal. 3235 during service; not factory original but functionally superior.
Authentication guide
The 116200 is the steel smooth-bezel Datejust 36 produced from approximately 2000 to 2015 before the 126200 replaced it. Cal. 3135 is the correct movement. The smooth bezel and Jubilee or Oyster bracelet options make this a versatile reference; the wide range of dial options creates an equally wide range of aftermarket substitution risk.
