The President model in yellow gold; the day disc language and President bracelet hidden clasp are the two highest-value authenticity checks.

Known issues in the market
  • Day disc language mismatch; Rolex Day-Date dials are ordered with specific day languages, and swapped discs from different configurations are common on the secondary market.
  • President bracelet with incorrect link finishing; genuine President links have a specific curved profile and factory finish that aftermarket copies fail to replicate.
  • Cal. 3255 Chronergy escapement details; movement fakes are rare but service records should document Rolex or authorized watchmaker service only.

Common legitimate replacements
  • President bracelets are frequently replaced or have links removed; original complete bracelet with clasp is required for full market value.
  • Dials are the most valuable single component and are swapped to create exotic or high-demand configurations; verify dial matches original order documentation.
  • Day discs are replaced to change language; original language configuration should match accompanying paperwork.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 228238 is the current Day-Date 40 in 18ct yellow gold on a President bracelet, powered by Cal. 3255. Day-Date references exist only in precious metal; any steel example is misrepresented. The dial variety for this reference is enormous, from plain to meteorite to gem-set.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

Steel or base-metal Day-Date cases

  • A magnet test reveals ferrous content in the case or bracelet; genuine 18ct yellow gold is non-magnetic
  • Case color that looks plated -- thin yellow over a lighter base -- will show wear at lug edges and bracelet pin holes
  • Weight: a genuine 228238 on President bracelet is significantly heavier than a plated or base-metal equivalent

The Day-Date has never been produced in steel. Any steel Day-Date is a modified or non-original example.

MEDIUM

Aftermarket dial substitution on genuine gold cases

  • Aftermarket dials often show incorrect text hierarchy or font differences from the genuine Rolex dial
  • Cyclops lens on aftermarket dials may show a different magnification or refractive quality
  • Day and date wheel text that does not match known factory configurations

Dial variants by era

toggle

President bracelet

Original: Three-piece semi-circular link design in solid 18ct yellow gold. The concealed clasp opens with a push-button mechanism and is flush when closed. The President bracelet is exclusive to the Day-Date family across the entire Rolex catalog. No production Rolex other than the Day-Date uses the President bracelet from the factory. Any watch on an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet presented as a Day-Date has had the bracelet changed.

Replacement tells
  • Bracelet that feels noticeably lighter than expected for solid gold construction
  • Links that appear hollow when viewed from the end cut
  • Clasp that shows the opening mechanism when closed (should be hidden)
  • Any bracelet that is not in yellow gold to match the case; mixed-metal Presidents do not exist from the factory on 228238
  • Oyster or Jubilee bracelet presented as an original Day-Date configuration -- the Day-Date has never shipped on these bracelets from Rolex
Dial

Original: Original dials carry the Rolex crown hallmark, "Day-Date" model text, and "OYSTER PERPETUAL" with the full superlative text. The day wheel is factory-matched to the dial language.

Replacement tells
  • Day wheel language that does not match the listed reference configuration
  • Aftermarket dials with incorrect text spacing or font weight for this generation
  • Cyclops lens that magnifies the date incorrectly (should be 2.5x)
  • Applied indexes that sit at incorrect angles or heights relative to the dial surface

Case back markings

toggle
2015 to present
  • Solid yellow gold caseback -- no exhibition window
  • Engraved: ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL DAY-DATE
  • Rolex crown engraved at center
  • Reference 228238 and serial between the lugs

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 3255 is the correct movement; it uses the Chronergy escapement, Syloxi hairspring, and achieves the COSC+Rolex Superlative Chronometer standard. Service documentation noting Cal. 3155 means the movement has been replaced with the prior generation.
  • Power reserve is approximately 70 hours. A movement running down in under 48 hours needs service or has a mainspring issue.
  • The oscillating weight bears the Rolex crown and is in 18ct yellow gold to match the case.
