Authentication

Square case with round corners is the Cape Cod signature; original Hermes orange box with accessories is expected with new examples.

Known issues in the market
  • The Cape Cod sold without its original Hermes packaging warrants closer provenance inspection.
  • The integrated leather strap double-tour configuration is the standard; a single-tour strap is a configuration change, not a defect, but should be disclosed.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Cape Cod is defined by its square case and single-strap wrapping architecture. The strap passes through or wraps around the case rather than attaching at lugs, and that is the first thing to verify.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

The Cape Cod's distinctive strap architecture is rarely replicated correctly. Most replicas default to a standard two-lug attachment.

  • Two-lug attachment with spring bars means the strap architecture is wrong; this is not a Cape Cod
  • "Hermès Paris" dial text on replicas has the same typeface inconsistencies as other Hermès replicas
  • Square case corners on replicas are sharper than genuine; genuine Cape Cod has a soft bevel that is difficult to machine at low cost

The strap routing is the single fastest check. If the strap attaches via conventional spring bar lugs, the watch is either not a Cape Cod or has been incorrectly serviced.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
1991 to presentSquare or rectangular steel case. Single leather strap that wraps around the case body. Roman numerals on most variants. "Hermès Paris" on dial.
  • The strap attachment: on a genuine Cape Cod, the strap is a single piece that routes through or around the case; there are no conventional lugs with spring bars
  • Case shape is either square or rectangular with softly beveled corners; round case means a different Hermès reference
  • Hermès H crown
2015 to present (double tour variant)Double-tour strap wraps twice around the wrist. Same square case.
  • Double-tour strap is longer and thinner; the wrap is the intended wearing style, not an adjustment
  • Buckle is the H-buckle on single-tour; a different buckle style on double-tour depending on variant

Service part flags

toggle
Strap

Original: Hermès proprietary leather; the strap is integral to the case architecture, not a secondary element.

Replacement tells
  • Standard two-lug strap on a Cape Cod means the watch has been modified or the strap is incorrect
  • Hermès replacement straps are available at boutiques; aftermarket straps rarely replicate the correct routing path
Crown

Original: Small push-pull crown with H logo.

Replacement tells
  • Crown without H logo is an aftermarket replacement

Case back markings

toggle
1991 to present
  • "Hermès Paris" and "Swiss Made"
  • Movement designation (ETA 2892 in older references; Hermès in-house in newer)
  • Reference and serial numbers
  • Water resistance (30M typical)

Movement tells

toggle
  • Older Cape Cod references use ETA 2892-A2; newer use Hermès in-house. Caseback confirms which.
  • The square case constrains rotor movement; after service, confirm the rotor does not contact the case wall in any orientation.
  • Quartz variants exist in the Cape Cod line; confirm battery-powered vs mechanical before purchase if the movement matters.
