The Three Bridges tourbillon is GP's most historically significant movement architecture, with roots tracing to 1867. The three parallel titanium bridges holding the gear train are the defining and testable visual element. Count the bridges. Verify they are parallel and diagonal. Nothing else matters as much.

Skeleton tourbillon replicas are produced in volume, often targeting buyers unfamiliar with the specific Three Bridges architecture. The bridge count and parallelism are the fastest visual disqualifiers.

  • Bridge count other than exactly three
  • Bridges that are not parallel or not diagonal in orientation
  • Tourbillon cage that does not rotate continuously when the watch is wound and running
  • Movement finishing under magnification that shows machine-uniform chamfers rather than hand-worked edges
  • Case or movement proportions inconsistent with the GP09800 architecture

The Three Bridges name and architecture are strongly associated with Girard-Perregaux. Any watch claiming to be a Three Bridges without GP provenance documentation should be treated with high skepticism.

Three parallel bridges

Original: Exactly three bridges, parallel to each other, running diagonally across the movement. Each bridge is titanium. The bridges hold the going train (gear train) in place. This architecture is patented and historically protected. Any non-GP watch claiming this architecture is either a licensee or a replica.

Replacement tells
  • Fewer or more than exactly three bridges visible across the movement
  • Bridges that are not parallel, or that run horizontally or vertically rather than diagonally
  • Bridges in a material other than titanium (gold-tone bridges on a stated current production piece would indicate a different variant or period)
  • Bridges that are straight bars without the shaped, finished ends visible in genuine GP production
Tourbillon carriage

Original: The tourbillon rotates once per minute. The cage should be clearly visible and rotate continuously when the watch is running. The carriage is typically titanium for weight reduction in the Three Bridges configuration.

Replacement tells
  • Tourbillon carriage that is stationary when the watch is running and wound
  • Tourbillon carriage in a material inconsistent with the known configuration
  • Tourbillon cage that wobbles laterally, indicating a worn pivot

Movement tells

  • Cal. GP09800 is a manual-wind tourbillon. There is no automatic rotor. A stated Three Bridges Tourbillon that winds automatically via wrist motion uses a different caliber and should be verified against the specific reference.
  • Power reserve is 60 hours. A fully wound Three Bridges that stops in under 48 hours indicates a mainspring issue or pivot wear.
  • The tourbillon must rotate exactly once per minute. Timing it against a seconds reference is a direct functional check.
  • GP finishing on the bridges and plates is among the highest in the industry. Under magnification, each bridge surface should show hand-finished bevels with consistent polish, not machine chamfers.
