Authentication

The integrated column-wheel chronograph movement and QuickSwitch bracelet are the definitive checks on a heavily replicated reference.

Known issues in the market
  • Replicas with pushers that do not operate a genuine column-wheel chronograph; fake chronograph hands do not sweep smoothly.
  • QuickSwitch mechanism that is decorative only and does not release the bracelet.
  • Subdial counters at wrong positions; genuine WSSA0017 has subdials at 3 and 9 only.
  • Exposed screws on bezel and bracelet with incorrect spacing or decorative (non-functional) screw heads.
  • Exhibition caseback showing a generic chronograph movement rather than Cal. 1904-CH MC.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather strap and metal bracelet are interchangeable via QuickSwitch and both are legitimate Cartier accessories.
  • Chronograph movements benefit from service every 7 to 10 years; service records from Cartier boutique or authorized watchmaker support authenticity.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Santos Chronograph combines the iconic exposed screw bezel of the Santos with a column-wheel chronograph movement. The visible screws on the bezel and integrated bracelet are the defining visual tells, and the QuickSwitch strap system is a modern authentication checkpoint for current-generation examples.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

The Santos is among the most-reproduced Cartier references. The exposed screw bezel is the fastest checkpoint.

  • Screws that are flat-painted dots rather than three-dimensional functional screws with visible screw slots
  • Screw spacing that is uneven or that does not follow the correct corner-and-midpoint placement
  • Bezel that is round rather than correctly square with chamfered corners
  • QuickSwitch mechanism absent on a stated current-generation example

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2020 to present (WSSA0017, large steel)Silver opaline dial with Roman numerals, blued sword hands, three chronograph pushers, and sub-dials at 3, 6, and 9.
  • Eight exposed screws on the square bezel (four at corners, four at midpoints); screws are polished and visible from the front
  • Three pusher configuration: pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock for start/stop and reset; crown at 3 o'clock with cabochon sapphire
  • Integrated steel bracelet with matching exposed screws on the links
  • Sub-dials: 30-minute counter, 12-hour counter, and running seconds -- all recessed below the main dial plane
  • "Santos de Cartier" text on the dial

Service part flags

Exposed screw bezel

Original: Eight polished screws set into the square bezel, flush with the bezel surface. The screws are functional (they hold the bezel to the case) and are evenly spaced at the corners and midpoints. Under magnification, the screw slots are clean and have not been tool-marked.

Replacement tells
  • Screws that are decorative only (not functional through-bolts) -- tap test with a ballpoint pen and the feel differs
  • Screw slots that show tool marks from improper removal, indicating bezel replacement
  • Uneven screw spacing or screw sizes that differ from each other
  • Screws that are brushed or satin-finished rather than polished
QuickSwitch strap system

Original: Modern Santos references include the QuickSwitch system allowing tool-free strap and bracelet swaps. The lug ends have a push-button release mechanism. On the WSSA0017, this system should be present and should function smoothly.

Replacement tells
  • Standard springbar lugs without the QuickSwitch button mechanism on a stated current-generation Santos
  • QuickSwitch buttons that do not depress cleanly or that show resistance suggesting damage

Case back markings

toggle
2020 to present
  • Solid caseback with reference WSSA0017 and serial number
  • "CARTIER", "ACIER", water resistance rating
  • Cal. 1904-CH MC chronograph movement designation on documentation
  • "Swiss Made"

Movement tells

toggle
  • The Santos Chronograph uses Cal. 1904-CH MC, a Cartier in-house integrated column-wheel chronograph. The caseback is solid on the standard WSSA0017.
  • A correctly serviced example should show smooth chronograph engagement with a positive column-wheel feel on the pushers. Any sponginess or lag in pusher response suggests the chronograph mechanism needs attention.
