For quartz variants, battery life is the primary service consideration. The serpent case construction makes battery access a watchmaker's task rather than a DIY operation.
For mechanical variants, the Cal. BVL 100 is a hand-wind caliber that requires manual winding -- there is no automatic rotor. The crown position on the serpent head is the winding crown.
