Authentication

Both flying tourbillons must each complete exactly one rotation per minute; any tourbillon that stops or rotates at the wrong rate is a serious fault.

Known issues in the market
  • Discontinued 2018; verify serial and provenance for any secondary market purchase.
  • Two distinct tourbillon cages must both rotate at one revolution per minute each.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Double Flying Tourbillon has two independent tourbillon cages visible simultaneously from the dial side. This complication at this finishing level has no credible reproduction. Authentication focuses on provenance and the movement finishing under loupe.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No credible mechanical reproduction of the Double Flying Tourbillon exists.

  • A single tourbillon presented as a double: the second cage is absent or decorative

Risk at this level is provenance fraud (misrepresented ownership history or documentation) rather than mechanical reproduction. Verification through Roger Dubuis directly is the appropriate due-diligence step.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2012 to 2018Open skeleton dial with two tourbillon cages at approximately 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions; both cages rotate independently at their own rates; no conventional subdials.
  • Two distinct tourbillon cages visible from the dial side simultaneously
  • Both cages should be in motion when the watch is running; their rotation rates differ
  • "ROGER DUBUIS" lettering on one of the movement bridges
  • Titanium 45mm case with Geneva Seal-finished movement bridges visible through the skeleton opening

Service part flags

toggle
Dual tourbillon cages

Original: Two separate flying-tourbillon cages, each completing one rotation per minute; mounted on separate arbors with a differential linking their regulation contribution.

Replacement tells
  • Only one tourbillon cage present: not the Double Flying Tourbillon
  • Second cage is decorative (does not rotate independently)
  • Both cages rotate at exactly the same rate with no visible phase difference: suggests a single drive train feeding both
Movement finishing

Original: Geneva Seal certification throughout; polished bevels, circular graining, mirror-polished anglage.

Replacement tells
  • Same finishing checks as the Excalibur 42 Auto apply here; any machine marks under loupe are disqualifying

Case back markings

toggle
2012 to 2018
  • Sapphire caseback showing the RD01SQ manual-wind movement reverse
  • Geneva Seal stamp visible on movement plate
  • Reference "RDDBEX0389" on inner case ring
  • "EXCALIBUR" and "ROGER DUBUIS GENEVE" on movement bridges visible through back

Movement tells

toggle
  • Both tourbillon cages complete one rotation per minute each; time one cage for 60 seconds against a reference to confirm.
  • Manual-wind only: no rotor present through caseback.
  • Power reserve is 40 hours from full wind; a movement stopping before 30 hours from full wind has a mainspring or service issue.
  • At this complication level and production volume, provenance is a primary authentication layer: original papers, Roger Dubuis service history, and purchase documentation should accompany any offered piece.
