Entry to the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève is voluntary and made by the brand. An entry is a watch registered for that year's competition, not a jury verdict, and several large houses including Rolex, Patek Philippe and Omega do not take part at all.

Authentication

The e-Crown must respond to smartphone pairing and successfully set the time; a non-responding e-Crown module requires Ressence service.

Known issues in the market
  • The e-Crown electromechanical module can fail if the watch has been stored discharged for extended periods.
  • Oil bubbles in the ROCS 2 module indicate a seal failure.

The Type 2 e-Crown adds an electromechanical crown synchronization module to the ROCS display system. The e-Crown module is visible on the caseback and allows time-setting via a button and Bluetooth rather than a physical crown. A 45mm titanium case.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No known replica. The combination of ROCS module and e-Crown electromechanical system is proprietary Ressence technology; no equivalent exists in any other watch.

  • A physical crown present on the Type 2 indicates modification or non-genuine case
  • e-Crown module missing from caseback disqualifies the watch as Type 2

Confirm the e-Crown battery state and module function before purchase; a non-functional e-Crown may require Ressence service to repair.

e-Crown module

Original: The electromechanical e-Crown module contains a small battery and micromotor that sets the ROCS display when the button is pressed. It is a separate unit from the ROCS module and the base movement.

Replacement tells
  • A physical crown present on the case side (Type 2 has none; its presence indicates modification)
  • e-Crown button that does not trigger display synchronization
  • e-Crown module that shows corrosion or physical damage

Case back markings

toggle
2019 to present
  • Ressence Type 2 e-Crown designation
  • Individual serial number
  • Ti material designation
  • e-Crown module specifications

Movement tells

toggle
  • The e-Crown battery (typically a small rechargeable cell) may need periodic replacement; a dead e-Crown battery does not affect the mechanical timekeeping but disables time-setting via e-Crown.
  • e-Crown service requires Ressence or an authorized service center; the electromechanical module is not serviceable by general watchmakers.
  • Confirm the e-Crown button triggers the synchronization function by pressing and observing the ROCS display adjustment.
