Price trend chart coming soon

The Chronometre Bleu is Journe's tantalum-only, chrome-blue-dial 39mm reference and one of the most recognizable pieces in independent watchmaking; secondary prices have risen consistently as supply tightens from collectors who buy and hold.

Editorial estimate, 2026 Q2. Actual prices vary by condition, date, and box/papers status.

Versatile size: fits most wrists (6–7.5 in / 15–19 cm)
39 mm case. The sweet spot for the broadest range of wrist sizes. Neither too dainty nor too bold.

The Chronometre Bleu shares caliber 1304 with the Chronometre Souverain in a 39mm TANTALUM case with a chrome blue dial. Tantalum is the case metal, not the dial material, and the reference has never been offered in platinum. Caliber 1304 has no remontoir.

Known issues in the market
  • The tantalum case is the primary identifier. Tantalum is dense, roughly twice steel by volume though lighter than platinum, and it does not refinish cleanly, so polished-out scratches show as softened case lines.
  • Dial damage is the main pre-owned concern; the chrome blue surface is fragile and replacement runs through FPJ.
  • A CB offered as platinum is either mis-described or not a CB.

Common legitimate replacements
  • The chrome blue dial cannot be refinished; a damaged dial requires FPJ replacement, which is expensive and documented.
  • Strap replacement is routine; verify lug width against FPJ specification for the reference.

Last reviewed July 2026

The Chronometre Bleu is the 39mm tantalum-cased sibling of the Chronometre Souverain and uses the same caliber 1304. Tantalum is the case metal, not the dial: the dial is a mirrored chrome blue built up from layers of hand-applied lacquer, and the reference has never been offered in platinum. Caliber 1304 has no remontoir.

Known reproduction risks

HIGH RISK

Plated or painted case presented as tantalum, or a lacquered blue dial presented as chrome blue

  • A case noticeably lighter than expected for its size -- tantalum is dense, roughly twice steel by volume
  • Case colour that reads as grey paint or PVD rather than the metal itself
  • Dial blue that is uniform and flat under raking light rather than mirror-deep

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2009 to presentChrome blue dial with cream-coloured hands and large Arabic numerals. Central hours and minutes, small seconds at 7:30, power reserve at 3.
  • Chrome blue finish with mirror depth that shifts character as the light angle changes
  • Cream or off-white hands, a CB-specific contrast the silver-dial Souverain does not use
  • FPJ Arabic numeral typeface, rendered larger on the CB than on the CS
  • "CHRONOMETRE BLEU" printed on the dial, one of the few FPJ references to carry its model name
  • Small seconds at 7:30 and power reserve at 3, the same architecture as the Souverain

Tantalum case

Original: Tantalum, 39mm diameter and 8.3mm overall height. Tantalum is a dense blue-grey refractory metal, roughly twice the density of steel though lighter than platinum, hard to machine and hard to refinish. Case condition therefore carries more weight here than on a gold or steel watch.

Replacement tells
  • A platinum, white gold or steel case presented as a CB -- the reference has only ever been tantalum
  • Case measuring 40mm -- that is the Souverain
  • Polished-out scratches with softened case lines, since tantalum does not refinish cleanly
Dial

Original: Mirrored chrome blue built up from multiple layers of hand-applied lacquer, each polished before the next. Not tantalum -- the tantalum in this reference is the case. The lacquer is the reason the dial is fragile: cracking and spidering are the known failure modes, and a damaged dial is replaced by FPJ, never refinished.

Replacement tells
  • A dial described or sold as tantalum -- the tantalum in this reference is the case
  • A silver Souverain dial fitted to a CB, which indicates a swap
  • Blue that reads flat under raking light where the layered lacquer has mirror depth
Movement (Cal. 1304)

Original: Identical to the Chronometre Souverain: 18k rose gold plates, 22 jewels, 21,600 vph, 56 +/- 2 hours from two barrels in parallel, manual-wind.

Replacement tells
  • Movement plates without gold colouring
  • Any automatic rotor visible through the caseback
  • A remontoir or star-cam near the escapement, which belongs to the Chronometre Optimum

Case back markings

toggle
2009 to present
  • "CB" reference designation on caseback
  • "CAL. 1304" movement designation
  • "F.P. JOURNE" and "GENEVE" engravings
  • Serial number (sequential from FPJ production)
  • Tantalum case material marking
  • 30M water resistance

Movement tells

toggle
  • Caliber 1304 service tells are the same as the Chronometre Souverain: 56 +/- 2 hours from twin parallel barrels, 38 turns for a full wind, 18k rose gold plates through the caseback, and no stepping cadence on the seconds hand.
  • The CB case is 1mm smaller in diameter than the CS. A movement that appears undersized for the case, or a loose fit, can indicate a swap out of a CS.
