One of the most counterfeited Cartier references; QuickSwitch mechanism quality and exhibition caseback movement are the definitive checks.
- Replica Santos WSSA0009 watches with incorrectly spaced screws on the bezel and bracelet.
- QuickSwitch mechanism that does not function (bracelet cannot be released by pressing the lateral pushers).
- Dial printing with blurred Roman numerals or incorrect Cartier typeface under magnification.
- Exhibition caseback showing a generic ETA movement instead of the correctly finished Cal. 1847 MC.
- Bracelet links that feel light and show tool marks; genuine Santos bracelet has alternating polished and brushed surfaces.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| bracelet | QuickSwitch mechanism | Two lateral pushers on bracelet sides, one at each lug, release the bracelet when pressed simultaneously; mechanism clicks positively and bracelet detaches cleanly; pusher finish matches bracelet finishing | Pushers that are decorative only and do not release the bracelet; mechanism that requires tools to operate; pushers that are misaligned or recessed unevenly |
| dial | Applied Cartier logo and Roman numerals | Applied Cartier logo at 12 is a flat metal piece with sharp edges; Roman numerals are in a specific Cartier typeface with consistent stroke width; "CARTIER" signature between 6 and 7; "SWISS MADE" at 6 | Printed (not applied) Cartier logo; Roman numerals with inconsistent stroke width; any blurring of text under 5x magnification; "AUTOMATIC" text absent or in wrong position |
| case | Exposed screws on bezel | Eight screws on the bezel are evenly spaced and have a consistent diameter; screw slots are at random angles (not aligned); screws are polished on the head and brushed on the bezel surround | Screws with aligned slots (indicates decorative screws, not functional); uneven screw spacing; screw heads that are painted or printed rather than actual metal screws |
| caseback | Exhibition caseback showing Cal. 1847 MC | Cal. 1847 MC visible through caseback; movement bridges are decorated (Côtes de Genève or circular graining); "CAL 1847 MC" text on movement; 23 jewels; Cartier branded rotor | Any movement other than 1847 MC; undecorated bridges; rotor without Cartier branding; generic ETA movement without Cartier finishing |
| dial | Blue spinel or sapphire cabochon on crown | Crown at 3 has a set blue cabochon gemstone; stone is rounded on top with no flat facets; consistent deep blue color | Flat-top stone (indicating glass or acrylic substitute); pale or inconsistent blue color; stone set in a recessed crown with visible glue |
- Leather strap or metal bracelet swaps are common; both are Cartier accessories with Cartier markings on the clasp.
- QuickSwitch spring mechanism may require service on well-worn examples.
- Crown cabochon stones have been replaced on vintage or worn examples; verify stone quality.
Authentication guide
The WSSA0009 is the large 40mm steel Santos in the current generation with QuickSwitch and Interchangeable Strap. It is the most widely sold current Santos configuration and attracts correspondingly high reproduction volume. Screw authenticity, QuickSwitch mechanism, and bracelet integration are the primary checkpoints.
