Authentication

One of the most counterfeited Cartier references; QuickSwitch mechanism quality and exhibition caseback movement are the definitive checks.

Known issues in the market
  • Replica Santos WSSA0009 watches with incorrectly spaced screws on the bezel and bracelet.
  • QuickSwitch mechanism that does not function (bracelet cannot be released by pressing the lateral pushers).
  • Dial printing with blurred Roman numerals or incorrect Cartier typeface under magnification.
  • Exhibition caseback showing a generic ETA movement instead of the correctly finished Cal. 1847 MC.
  • Bracelet links that feel light and show tool marks; genuine Santos bracelet has alternating polished and brushed surfaces.

Common legitimate replacements

  • QuickSwitch spring mechanism may require service on well-worn examples.
  • Crown cabochon stones have been replaced on vintage or worn examples; verify stone quality.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The WSSA0009 is the large 40mm steel Santos in the current generation with QuickSwitch and Interchangeable Strap. It is the most widely sold current Santos configuration and attracts correspondingly high reproduction volume. Screw authenticity, QuickSwitch mechanism, and bracelet integration are the primary checkpoints.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

The large Santos 40mm is the highest-volume Cartier reproduction reference. The screw bezel is the fastest field checkpoint.

  • Bezel screws that are flat or embossed rather than functional through-bolts with visible slots
  • Square bezel that has rounded corners rather than the crisp 45-degree chamfer of originals
  • QuickSwitch mechanism absent or non-functional on a stated current-generation example
  • Bracelet that shows a visible gap at the case-to-end-link junction
  • Water resistance stated as 30m on a stated current WSSA0009 -- current generation is 100m

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2018 to present (WSSA0009, large steel)Silver opaline dial with Roman numerals, blued sword hands, date between III/IV, and the eight-screw square bezel.
  • Large case: 40mm width with the square bezel -- more assertive proportions than the medium WSSA0061
  • Eight exposed screws on the square bezel: four at corners, four at side midpoints; all polished and functional
  • QuickSwitch lug mechanism for tool-free strap swap
  • Date window integrated at approximately 3-4 o'clock position on the dial field
  • "Santos de Cartier" text on the lower dial field
  • Cabochon sapphire crown at 3 o'clock, positioned within the right case side

Service part flags

Exposed screw bezel (large case)

Original: The eight screws are true functional screws with visible slotted heads, polished to match the bezel surfaces. At 40mm, the screws are proportionally larger than on the medium Santos. Under magnification, the slots are clean and show no tool marks.

Replacement tells
  • Screws with slots that show tool damage from improper bezel removal
  • Screw heads that are decorative molded elements rather than true functional screws with slots
  • Unequal screw spacing -- they should be precisely placed at corners and midpoints, not at arbitrary intervals
  • Screws that are recessed below the bezel surface level rather than sitting flush
Integrated bracelet and end links

Original: The large Santos bracelet end links integrate smoothly with the case at the correct width. The bracelet includes a folding deployant clasp with "CARTIER" engraving. The bracelet uses the QuickSwitch system at the lug junction.

Replacement tells
  • Any visible gap between the end link and the case body
  • Bracelet width at the end link that does not match the lug width of the 40mm case
  • Clasp without "CARTIER" engraving or with engraving that is too shallow or in incorrect typeface
  • QuickSwitch mechanism absent on a stated current-generation WSSA0009

Case back markings

toggle
2018 to present
  • Solid caseback with reference WSSA0009 and serial number
  • "CARTIER", "ACIER", water resistance (100m on current generation)
  • Cal. 1847 MC on documentation
  • "Swiss Made"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 1847 MC automatic; solid caseback. The 100m water resistance on the current WSSA0009 is higher than earlier Santos generations (30m); verify that the stated water resistance matches the reference documentation.
