Authentication

The main question on a two-tone Santos is whether the gold is solid or plated, and whether the bracelet belongs to the watch. Both are checkable without opening it.

Known issues in the market
  • Cartier made both solid gold and gold-plated Santos variants, and plated parts are sometimes mixed into a watch sold as solid gold. Wear at the bezel screw heads and bracelet link edges shows this first.
  • Bracelets are swapped between Santos generations. The Galbée bracelet has convex links and does not interchange cleanly with the earlier flat-link Carrée bracelet.
  • Dials are refinished, and reprinted Cartier text and the concealed signature in the numerals are the usual places to look.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Crown cabochons are lost and replaced routinely and carry little originality penalty.
  • Deployant clasps wear and are frequently replaced; a signed Cartier clasp is worth confirming.
Expert resources: Phillips catalogues this reference with the caliber and case dimensions in its lot text, and Sotheby’s has sold it as well. The two houses do not agree on whether to call the reference a Carrée or a Galbée, so match on the reference number rather than on the name.
