Authentication

The hand-sculpted asymmetric case of the Crash London cannot be replicated; any symmetrical or geometrically regular case is not genuine.

Known issues in the market
  • Counterfeit Crash watches use molded asymmetric cases that show mold lines; genuine Crash London cases are hand-sculpted with organic, unrepeatable distortion.
  • The Cal. 1917 MC is ultra-thin; any movement through the caseback appearing thicker than the case depth allows is a swap.

Common legitimate replacements
  • No practical replacements exist for genuine Crash London components; any deviation from factory spec is a red flag.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Crash is one of the most architecturally unusual cases in fine watchmaking. The asymmetric melted-rectangle form was originally created by Cartier London in the 1960s following a car accident that deformed a Baignoire case. The 2022 London Crash in platinum is a limited revival. Provenance, platinum confirmation, and the movement finishing are the key checkpoints.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Crash is among the least-reproduced Cartier references due to the extreme difficulty of replicating the asymmetric case form.

  • Any case where the distortion appears regular or symmetrical is not a Crash

Provenance documentation and platinum confirmation matter far more here than visual comparison against reproductions, which are essentially non-existent for this reference.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2022 London Crash Platinum (CRWHPI0008)White lacquer or skeleton dial within the asymmetric distorted case form. The case has no straight edges; it is a distorted ellipse that narrows and curves in multiple planes.
  • Asymmetric case: the top of the case bends to one side (typically right) and the overall form tapers toward the bottom -- there is no axis of symmetry
  • Platinum case: cool grey-white metal, noticeably heavier than white gold for the same size
  • Dial text is minimal; the "Cartier" signature must follow the curve of the dial field
  • Crown position follows the distorted case geometry, not at a standard 3 or 9 o'clock position
  • Caseback may be display or solid depending on the 2022 configuration; verify with documentation

Service part flags

Case (asymmetric distorted form)

Original: The entire Crash case is intentionally asymmetric. Any attempt to "correct" or regularize the form through polishing would permanently damage the reference. Original polishing follows the distorted curves continuously.

Replacement tells
  • Case that appears to have been re-polished in a way that reduces the intentional distortion
  • Any flat or straightened section on a case that should be continuously curved in all planes

Case back markings

toggle
2022 London reissue
  • Platinum hallmark (PT950)
  • Reference CRWHPI0008 and serial number
  • "CARTIER LONDON" designation referencing the original Cartier London workshop provenance
  • Limited edition number if applicable to the specific example

Movement tells

toggle
  • The Crash uses a movement fitted to the asymmetric case form; standard Cal. 430 MC family. Movement access requires Cartier tooling due to the unconventional caseback geometry.
  • At this price point and rarity, any pre-owned Crash should be accompanied by Cartier documentation. Authentication via Cartier customer service is straightforward for numbered pieces.
