The 5227 Officer case with hinged caseback commands a premium over standard Calatrava references; the finishing required for a functional hinged caseback adds genuine craftsmanship that the market prices accordingly.

The officer's caseback double-hinge mechanism must open and close with no play; looseness in the hinge indicates wear or damage.

Known issues in the market
  • The hinged solid caseback hinge is a precision mechanism; any play or misalignment when closed indicates wear.
  • The engraving space inside the outer caseback is sometimes used to hide dial or movement replacements; open both casebacks during inspection.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather strap is the standard configuration; correct Patek yellow gold clasp is important.
  • The officer's caseback hinge is a service item; any hinge work should be performed by Patek or an authorized service center.
Expert resources: Patek Philippe authentication by serial number. The officer's case mechanism is best inspected in person; request the watchmaker open both casebacks during a pre-purchase inspection. WatchUSeek Patek forum for 5227 caseback photography.

Last reviewed June 2026

The 5227J is a yellow gold Calatrava with a hinged inner officer's caseback protecting the movement. The double-hinged construction is a defining physical characteristic that has no equivalent in other Calatrava references.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Yellow gold Calatrava dress watches presented as the 5227, often lacking the correct double-hinged caseback construction.

  • Caseback that is a single cover without the double-hinged officer's construction
  • Outer caseback that screws on rather than hinges
  • White gold hands rather than yellow gold
  • Applied text that is flat or printed rather than raised

Dial variants by era

Caseback construction

Original: The 5227 uses a solid outer caseback that opens via a hinge, revealing an inner hinged cover protecting the movement. Two separate hinged covers -- outer and inner -- are the defining structural feature.

Replacement tells
  • A single caseback without the double-hinged construction indicates a different Calatrava reference, not a 5227
  • Outer caseback hinge that is loose or shows play -- the hinge should have zero perceptible play when closed
  • Inner cover without the correct hinge geometry for the 5227 specification
Dial

Original: Silver opaline with a radial sun-brushed finish visible under directional light. Applied yellow gold baton indices with polished flat tops.

Replacement tells
  • Flat matte dial without the correct opaline sun-brushed radial quality
  • Applied indices that are white gold rather than yellow gold -- incorrect for this reference
  • Flat "Patek Philippe" text without shadow
Hands

Original: Leaf-form hands in polished yellow gold. The leaf taper runs gracefully from stem to tip.

Replacement tells
  • Hands in white gold rather than yellow gold -- incorrect for this reference
  • Blunt or thickened tips inconsistent with the correct leaf form
Crown

Original: Yellow gold crown at 3 o'clock with Patek coin-edge profile. Manual-wind crown with a smooth wind action appropriate for Cal. 215 PS.

Replacement tells
  • Crown without coin-edge milling or with incorrect diameter
  • Crown metal tone inconsistent with yellow gold

Case back markings

toggle
2012 to present
  • Outer caseback is solid, engraved with "Patek Philippe & Co Geneve" and the Calatrava cross in relief
  • Inner hinged cover protects the movement and opens separately to reveal Cal. 215 PS
  • "Officer's case" construction: outer opens by hinge, inner opens by hinge in the opposite direction
  • Reference 5227J-001 and serial number on the case flank
  • 18K yellow gold hallmark (750 fineness)

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 215 PS is a manual-wind ultra-thin movement at 2.55mm height. The manual wind should feel smooth with progressive resistance as the mainspring fills.
  • No automatic winding, no date, no additional complications -- this is a time-only movement with small seconds only.
  • Gyromax balance wheel with four gold adjustment weights. Free-sprung design confirmed by the absence of any regulator spring contact with the hairspring.
  • Cotes de Geneve striping on bridges, polished chamfers, and mirror-flat main plate are the Geneva Seal finishing standards. Any coarse finishing indicates the movement has been replaced.
  • The inner caseback cover should open without binding and close with a positive snap engagement.
