Authentication

The all-ceramic case and bezel are the primary authenticity signal; ceramic finishing quality and the Liquidmetal tachymeter scale are difficult to replicate to Omega tolerances.

Known issues in the market
  • Bezel tachymeter scales cast or printed in a plain alloy rather than genuine Liquidmetal; Liquidmetal has a distinct bright, hard-edged fill against the black ceramic that plain paint or engraving cannot match.
  • Ceramic case chips or hairline cracks around the lugs and pushers, which are stress points on a monobloc-feeling ceramic build; any repair on ceramic (unlike steel) leaves a visible seam.
  • Cal. 9908 hand-wound movement swapped for a cheaper automatic caliber; a rotor visible through the sapphire caseback on this reference is disqualifying since the caliber is manual-wind.

caseBlack ceramic case and bezel finishUniform brushed-and-polished black ceramic across case and bezel with no color variation between components; ceramic surface is glass-hard with no tool marksVisible color mismatch between case and bezel ceramic; soft-looking finish consistent with coated metal rather than solid ceramic; any chip or crack
caseLiquidmetal tachymeter scale on the bezelTachymeter numerals inlaid in genuine Liquidmetal alloy, bright and perfectly flush with the ceramic surfacePrinted, painted, or engraved-and-filled tachymeter scale instead of inlaid Liquidmetal; numerals sitting proud of or recessed into the ceramic
movementCal. 9908 hand-wound column-wheel chronographManual-wind movement visible through the sapphire caseback with a matte-blackened mainplate and bridges, no automatic rotor, two-register layout (small seconds at 9, combined minute/hour counter at 3)Automatic rotor visible through the caseback; three-register (tri-compax) layout instead of two-register; movement finish inconsistent with the black-edition treatment
braceletRubber strap with lunar-surface patternBlack rubber strap molded with a lunar-surface texture on the underside, ceramic foldover claspSmooth or generically textured strap underside; non-ceramic or unsigned clasp
Common legitimate replacements
  • Straps are the most commonly swapped component; confirm any replacement is Omega-sourced with the correct lunar-surface underside texture.
  • A cracked or chipped ceramic bezel cannot be buffed out like metal; any bezel showing a repair or fill is a value-destroying replacement, not a refinish.
