Verify METAS certification on the caseback for Cal. 8400; the pre-2018 Seamaster 300M with helium escape valve is correct for this generation, and a missing or non-sealing valve is a maintenance flag.

Known issues in the market
  • Cal. 8400 is METAS Master Chronometer; absence of the METAS caseback stamp indicates a movement swap or a pre-Master Chronometer generation watch.
  • The helium escape valve at 10 is functional; a valve that will not fully tighten needs a new seal.
  • Wave-pattern dials are machine-engraved on genuine examples; printed-wave fakes appear flat under raking light.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Helium escape valves are replaced on heavily dived examples; confirm the valve is Omega-marked.
  • Rubber dive straps are a frequent cosmetic swap; original Omega-signed metal clasp confirms bracelet or strap provenance.

Last reviewed June 2026

The modern Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial uses cal. 8400 with a silicon balance spring for anti-magnetic performance. The broad-arrow and lollipop-seconds hand design -- referencing the 1957 CK 2913 -- are the primary visual identifiers. Confirm both hands are original before any other check.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Non-original lollipop hand or broad-arrow hand substitution

  • Pointed seconds hand replacing the lollipop disc -- the most common single component swap
  • Standard Omega baton hands rather than broad-arrow hands
  • Lume color mismatch between hands and dial indices

The modern Seamaster 300 is not faked in high volume. Hand substitutions -- replacing the distinctive broad-arrow or lollipop design with standard Omega hands -- are the documented concern.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2014 to present (cal. 8400)Black or blue dial with warm cream lume. Broad-arrow hour and minute hands. Lollipop seconds hand with a circular disc. Unidirectional rotating bezel with black aluminum insert. Screw-down crown for 300m water resistance. "300 M / 1000 FT" on the dial or bezel.
  • Broad-arrow hour and minute hands -- wide body with triangular arrowhead tip
  • Lollipop seconds hand with circular lume disc at the tip
  • Warm cream/ivory lume matching between hands and indices
  • "Seamaster" text at 12 o'clock
  • Aluminum bezel insert on base models -- not ceramic
  • "Master Co-Axial" designation confirming the caliber generation

Service part flags

toggle
Lollipop seconds hand

Original: The circular disc at the tip is lume-filled and matches the index lume color. The hand stem and disc are in stainless steel matching the case. Disc diameter is proportional to the case and is consistent across the reference.

Replacement tells
  • Standard pointed seconds hand where a circular disc should be
  • Disc lume color different from the dial indices
  • Disc not centered on the stem -- alignment is precise on genuine examples
Aluminum bezel insert

Original: Base models use an aluminum insert, not ceramic. Aluminum shows UV fading at the 12 o'clock pip over time -- this is an expected characteristic of aluminum. The bezel numerals are engraved and filled rather than printed.

Replacement tells
  • Ceramic insert on a base model sold as having an aluminum insert
  • Bezel numerals appearing screen-printed rather than engraved
  • Insert color too uniform with no UV fading -- either new replacement or ceramic

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to present
  • Caliber 8400 designation (or 8401 for COSC-certified examples)
  • "CO-AXIAL MASTER CHRONOMETER" text
  • "300 M / 1000 FT" water resistance
  • "Seamaster" text and wave decoration
  • Case reference and serial number
  • "OMEGA" and "SWISS MADE"
  • Solid caseback -- no display caseback on this reference

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 8400 uses a silicon balance spring. The spring is non-metallic and appears blue-silver under magnification. The spring's anti-magnetic performance is a material characteristic, not visible under normal inspection.
  • Power reserve is 60 hours with bidirectional automatic winding. A watch stopping consistently after 24 hours on the wrist has a rotor or mainspring issue.
  • The screw-down crown must fully engage for 300m water resistance. Test by advancing the crown to the first stop and confirming it threads smoothly without wobble.
