Authentication

Column wheel visible through caseback is the definitive movement check; sub-dial layout is case-specific.

Known issues in the market
  • Incorrectly positioned sub-dials indicate a wrong dial for this case; Marine Chronograph case is engineered for a specific sub-register layout.
  • Pusher play around apertures indicates wear; machined tolerances on Marine Chronograph are tight.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Marine Chronograph 43mm uses the in-house Cal. UN-76 column-wheel chronograph with silicon components. The column-wheel mechanism is visible through some movement orientations and the pusher action should be crisp. The 18k gold rotor mass is a specific tell for the genuine UN-76.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Marine Chronograph replicas exist but the 18k gold rotor mass and silicon components are movement-level tells that distinguish genuine examples.

  • All-steel rotor visible through caseback instead of the gold-mass rotor of Cal. UN-76
  • Silicon escape components absent from the movement
  • Pusher action that lacks the crisp column-wheel click character
  • Dial text blurring or inconsistent character weight under loupe

Chronograph pushers

Original: Screw-down chronograph pushers sealed for water resistance. The pushers must be screwed down (unlocked) before activating. Activation should produce a crisp, positive click consistent with a column-wheel mechanism.

Replacement tells
  • Pushers that do not screw down (non-sealed replacement pushers)
  • Pusher action that is mushy or lacks positive click (indicates worn or non-column-wheel mechanism)
  • Non-functional chronograph activation on either pusher
Movement rotor via caseback

Original: Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. UN-76. The rotor carries an 18k gold mass -- this appears as a distinctly warmer, gold-colored segment on the rotor arc compared to the steel movement components.

Replacement tells
  • Rotor without a gold-colored mass -- an all-steel rotor indicates movement replacement or non-original rotor
  • Movement layout inconsistent with Cal. UN-76 known bridge geometry
  • Silicon escape components absent (flat dark non-reflective components should be visible)
Anchor crown

Original: Screw-down crown with anchor logo on the end face. The crown screws down for 100m water resistance.

Replacement tells
  • Crown without anchor logo
  • Crown that does not screw down to seal
  • Crown with thread damage preventing proper seating

Case back markings

toggle
2012 to present
  • Exhibition caseback with Cal. UN-76 visible
  • 18k gold rotor mass visible as a warm-colored segment on the rotor arc
  • "Ulysse Nardin" on the movement plate or bridge
  • Silicon escape wheel and lever visible as flat dark components
  • Reference 1533-150-3/43 and serial number on the case band
  • Steel hallmark on the case band

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. UN-76 is a column-wheel chronograph. The column wheel is visible under magnification through the caseback in some orientations. A column-wheel mechanism produces a notably crisper pusher action than a cam-actuated chronograph.
  • The 18k gold rotor mass is a specific production detail of the UN-76. Its absence on a stated genuine movement confirms a movement swap.
  • Silicon escape components in Cal. UN-76 should appear as flat, dark, non-reflective elements. Conventional metal components in their place indicate a non-original escapement.
  • Power reserve is approximately 48 hours. A Marine Chronograph stopping before 40 hours when fully wound warrants service.
