Brand history

Founded 1846 by Ulysse Nardin in Le Locle (Neuchatel canton). The brand supplied marine chronometers to navies of over 50 countries and won more than 4,300 prizes for precision at international observatory competitions before the quartz era. Kering Group acquired Ulysse Nardin in 2014. The modern brand pioneered silicon escapement components in partnership with CSEM and EPFL, launching the first commercially available silicon pallet lever and escape wheel in 2001 (Freak), and has since integrated silicon into most of its in-house calibers via the Silicium and InnoVision programs.

Founded 1846 in Le Locle by Ulysse Nardin, who made his reputation building marine chronometers for the Swiss Federal Observatory precision trials. Nardin chronometers won more Observatory precision trials than any other maker from 1869 to 1876. The Freak (2001) was the most radical watch architecture of the modern era: no crown, no hands, the entire movement rotating as the display, a silicon escapement on a central bridge that acted as the minute hand, with the main spring-barrel as the hour hand. Ulysse Nardin pioneered silicon escapement components at scale (in collaboration with CSEM, the Swiss Federal research institute) starting in 2001. The brand was acquired by Kering in 2014. The Freak, Diver, and Marine chronometer lines anchor the catalog. The buyer's note: Ulysse Nardin is underrated relative to its engineering pedigree, the silicon escapement work is historically significant, the marine-chronometer heritage is genuine, and the Freak architecture is genuinely novel in a market where novelty is rarer than marketing implies.
