Originality

Originality matters on this reference. An original dial and hands command a significant premium. Service replacements typically trade at a 20-40% discount to original examples.

Authentication

The 16610 is one of the most-replicated watches ever made, and modern replicas are convincing at a glance. Movement inspection and bracelet fit are the two checks that still separate them reliably.

Known issues in the market
  • High-quality replicas of this reference are widespread and improve every year. A visual check of the dial alone is not sufficient.
  • The reference ran for more than twenty years, so parts from different periods are often mixed. Tritium dials in late cases and Luminova dials in early ones are both common.
  • Aftermarket bezel inserts are sold openly and are fitted often, since the original aluminium insert fades and scratches.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Bezel inserts are consumables and are replaced frequently, including with aftermarket parts.
  • Clasps and end links wear and are commonly swapped; confirm the Rolex markings on both.
Expert resources: Sotheby’s and Bonhams both catalogue the 16610 often and their lot text sets out caliber, case and bracelet stamps. Any purchase above a few thousand pounds is worth putting in front of a Rolex-trained watchmaker who can open it.
