The precision moon phase is accurate to 1 day in 122.6 years; verify moon disc matches actual moon phase and setting pusher at 8 operates correctly.

Known issues in the market
  • Setting the moon phase incorrectly is the most common buyer mistake; the pusher at the 8-position must be pressed carefully.
  • The moon disc must show two moons with one correctly positioned behind the aperture at 6.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase scales the Lange 1 architecture to 40.9mm and adds a lunar phase display within the subsidiary seconds register. The moon disc is the key inspection point: Lange uses a hand-crafted enamel disc on the premium version and a printed disc on the standard reference.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase is not reproduced. The dial complexity and movement architecture are beyond current replica capabilities.

  • Movement without three-quarter plate architecture
  • Moon disc with simplified star field or asymmetrical moon apertures
  • Dial with printed chapter ring rather than a separately applied ring component

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2013 to present (yellow gold 139.021 and pink gold 139.032, standard dial)The standard production Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase uses a printed moon disc within a blued sub-dial. The moon phase disc shows a star field with two moon apertures. The primary variant is in yellow or pink gold with a warm argenté dial.
  • Moon phase disc within the sub-seconds register at lower left: two moon apertures visible on the disc, star field between them
  • Outsize date at upper right using the standard two-disc Grossdatum
  • "Grand Lange 1" text at lower center
  • The sub-register containing the moon phase is larger than the equivalent sub-seconds register on the standard Lange 1
  • Power reserve sector at lower right on variants that include it -- the 139.025 does not have a power reserve indicator
2013 to present (special editions with enamel moon disc)Limited production editions of the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase use a hand-crafted Grand Feu enamel moon disc. These are identifiable by the distinct visual depth and translucency of the enamel versus the printed disc on standard references.
  • Enamel moon disc: the star field has visible depth and slight translucency under raking light; a printed disc is flat
  • The "Lumen" edition specifically uses a luminescent moon disc; the enamel editions have a distinctive micro-smooth texture
  • Edition-specific case metal and dial color combinations; verify against Lange production records for the stated edition

Moon phase disc

Original: Printed or enamel disc with star field and two moon apertures. The printed version is flat but precisely detailed under 10x magnification. The enamel version has visible depth. Both must be seated correctly in the sub-register with the moon position accurately reflecting the current lunar phase.

Replacement tells
  • Printed disc with any pixelation or ink bleeding visible at 10x magnification
  • Star field that is asymmetrical or missing stars at the disc edges
  • Moon disc that is off-center in its sub-register
  • On enamel editions: any crazing, cracking, or matte areas that indicate enamel damage

Case back markings

toggle
2013 to present
  • Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. L095.3 (or evolution)
  • "A. Lange & Söhne" and "Glashütte i/Sa." on the three-quarter plate
  • Three-quarter plate in German silver with Glashütte stripe finishing
  • Hand-engraved balance cock unique per example
  • Moon phase drive wheel visible at the movement periphery

Movement tells

toggle
  • The moon phase accuracy on Cal. L095.3 requires correcting by approximately one day every 122.6 years; the corrector pusher is accessible without opening the case. If the moon phase is significantly off, verify the corrector was not over-pressed.
  • Movement finishing standards are identical to all other Lange calibers; Glashütte stripes and hand-engraved balance cock are required.
