Price trend chart coming soon

The 7-Day Power Reserve Portugieser is the defining large-dress-sport watch in the IWC lineup; in-house movement and distinctive reserve display justify its premium over the standard Portugieser.

Editorial estimate, 2026 Q2. Actual prices vary by condition, date, and box/papers status.

Large case: suits wrists 7 in+ (18 cm+)
42.3 mm case. A bold, statement-size wear. Best suited to larger wrists where the case sits flush.

Seven-day power reserve display on the dial and correct Cal. 5101 (or earlier 5000/98295) signing authenticate the IWC Portugieser 7-Day

Known issues in the market
  • Earlier references used modified pocket-watch-sized movements (Cal. 98295 or Cal. 5000) before the in-house Cal. 5101
  • Power reserve must span 7 days; verify by winding fully and running down with a timer
  • Large case (42mm or 44mm) and exhibition caseback are standard; solid caseback indicates an issue
AreaWhat to checkWhat is correctRed flag
dialSeven-day power reserve displayPower reserve indicator scaled to 7 days on subsidiary dial or arc; "7 Days" or "168 hours" text per variant; "IWC Schaffhausen" and "Portugieser" text; Arabic numerals consistent with Portugieser design languagePower reserve scale shorter than 7 days; missing power reserve display; dial text inconsistent with documented Portugieser Automatic (different reference without 7-day reserve)
movementCal. 5101 or earlier calibre"Cal. 5101" (current) or "Cal. 98295 / 5000" (earlier) on movement; large-diameter movement architecture derived from pocket-watch sizing; exhibition caseback standard; "IWC" signed; hand-finish quality consistent with IWC standardETA-based movement in a claimed 7-day Portugieser; power reserve mechanism absent; calibre inconsistent with documented production years
case42mm or 44mm large pilot-adjacent case42.3mm or 44mm diameter per production year; slim bezel; exhibition caseback; crown at 3 without crown guards; sapphire crystal with anti-reflection coating; "IWC" on crownSolid caseback on exhibition variant; case diameter inconsistent with documented 7-day Portugieser spec; crown guards present
Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather strap with pin buckle is OEM standard; alligator options are factory; aftermarket replacement common.
  • Large exhibition caseback allows movement assessment without service; verify caseback sealing is intact.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The IWC Portugieser Automatic 7-Day is less frequently replicated than Rolex or AP but commands enough secondary value that movement confirmation and dial authenticity are worth verifying carefully.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replica watches targeting the Portugieser 7-Day with generic movements substituted.

  • Sub-seconds register at 6 o'clock rather than the correct 9 o'clock position
  • Power reserve indicator that does not track correctly or has incorrect scale markings
  • Exhibition caseback showing a non-IWC movement architecture without the prominent barrel
  • "IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN" text with font weight or character spacing inconsistent with known IWC production
LOW

Authentic-case watches with movement swaps from other IWC generations.

  • Power reserve less than seven days on a fully wound watch -- indicates a non-7-day movement has been installed
  • Movement visible through caseback without the characteristic Pellaton winding architecture

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2003 to present (silver or white dial)Silver argenté or white dial with Roman numeral chapter ring and Portugieser-specific sub-seconds at 9.
  • Applied Roman numeral chapter ring with correct proportions for each numeral position
  • Sub-seconds register at 9 o'clock (not at 6) -- distinguishes the Portugieser from many other IWC three-handers
  • 7-day power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock with correctly graduated scale
  • "IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN" text printed in the correct IWC Portugieser typeface below 12
  • Skeleton-style open worked chapter ring showing the dial surface between the chapter ring and the markers

Service part flags

toggle
Power reserve indicator

Original: Seven-day power reserve sector at 3 o'clock with a pointer indicating reserve level. The scale should read correctly from full (7 days) through empty. The pointer must track accurately through the full wind cycle.

Replacement tells
  • Power reserve pointer that does not track correctly through a full wind cycle
  • Incorrect scale markings or incorrect pointer profile for the 5001 specification
  • Power reserve scale positioned at a different location than 3 o'clock -- non-standard position indicates a dial substitution
Sub-seconds register

Original: Sub-seconds at 9 o'clock on a small disc with a sweep seconds hand. The position at 9 is the defining Portugieser layout.

Replacement tells
  • Sub-seconds register at 6 o'clock rather than 9 -- indicates the wrong dial or a different IWC reference
  • Register disc with incorrect color or finish inconsistent with the main dial tone
Alligator strap

Original: IWC ships the 5001 on a genuine alligator strap with a pin buckle or deployment clasp bearing the IWC logo.

Replacement tells
  • Non-IWC buckle markings on the original hardware
  • Strap that does not match the known alligator pattern and finish for this reference

Case back markings

toggle
2003 to present
  • Exhibition caseback showing Cal. 51011 (in-house IWC caliber)
  • "IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN" engraved on the caseback in correct IWC typeface
  • Reference 5001 and serial number engraved on the case band
  • Swiss hallmarks for stated case material
  • Seven-day power reserve indicator visible through the caseback as the mainspring barrel

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 51011 is the IWC in-house 7-day movement. The movement is visible through the exhibition caseback. The mainspring barrel is prominent and shows the reserve level directly.
  • Seven-day power reserve test: fully wind the crown and verify that the power reserve indicator reads full. Then leave the watch unworn and confirm it runs for approximately seven days before stopping.
  • Pellaton winding system: Cal. 51011 uses the IWC Pellaton automatic winding system with ceramic parts. The winding action should feel smooth and efficient with a distinct Pellaton character distinct from standard ball-bearing rotors.
  • Non-IWC movements (ETA 7750 or similar) are occasionally swapped into Portugieser cases. A non-IWC movement will show a different bridge architecture and will lack the prominent barrel visible in the genuine Cal. 51011.
