GrailAtlasAn independent mechanical watch reference

Entry to the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève is voluntary and made by the brand. An entry is a watch registered for that year's competition, not a jury verdict, and several large houses including Rolex, Patek Philippe and Omega do not take part at all.

Authentication

The hand-drawn hairspring must show irregular natural geometry under magnification; machine-regular geometry means the hairspring has been replaced.

Known issues in the market
  • Only a handful of Hand Made 1 pieces exist; any purchase requires direct verification with Greubel Forsey.
  • The hairspring is hand-drawn; its geometry will appear naturally irregular, not machine-uniform.

  • No replacements; Hand Made 1 components are unique and irreplaceable.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Hand Made 1 is built using only traditional pre-industrial tools; no CNC machining. Authentication at this level is provenance-based. The movement finishing under loupe reveals hand-tool marks that are fundamentally different in character from machine-finished bridges.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

No credible mechanical reproduction exists or is conceivable given the production method.

  • Machine-finishing marks under loupe replacing the hand-tool marks
  • Perfectly uniform surface patterns inconsistent with hand work

The Hand Made 1 is authenticated primarily through provenance. Any piece offered without full Greubel Forsey paperwork should be treated with maximum caution regardless of the mechanical appearance.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2020 to presentSilver dial with Roman numerals; small seconds subdial; power reserve indicator; white gold case; the dial itself is hand-crafted using traditional guilloché or similar techniques.
  • Roman numeral chapter ring is hand-engraved or applied; examine each numeral individually for the slight variation in depth and angle that characterizes hand engraving versus machine engraving
  • Case is white gold 18k; no titanium or steel variants
  • Movement finishing shows hand-tool marks under loupe that are irregular in a characteristic way: the patterns are not perfectly uniform because a human hand applied them

Service part flags

toggle
Movement hand-finishing

Original: Entire movement finished using pre-industrial tools only; the bridges show surface textures that vary slightly across the piece because no CNC step introduces uniformity.

Replacement tells
  • Perfectly uniform surface patterns under loupe: machine-finished replacement movement
  • Any surface showing consistent, repeating machine marks
Hairspring

Original: Hairspring is hand-made from scratch; the spring profile and terminal curve are hand-formed. This is stated explicitly in the watch name.

Replacement tells
  • A genuine Hand Made 1 arriving at service with a factory-sourced replacement hairspring has lost a significant part of its originality; this should be disclosed and is a meaningful reduction in value

Case back markings

toggle
2020 to present
  • Sapphire caseback showing the hand-made movement in detail
  • "GREUBEL FORSEY" on the movement plate
  • "HAND MADE 1" designation on movement or case ring
  • White gold case back; no titanium or steel variant
  • Serial within Greubel Forsey production range

Movement tells

toggle
  • Under 10x loupe, the surface treatments on the movement bridges show the characteristic slight irregularity of hand work; compare two adjacent stripes in the Geneva pattern and look for micro-variation in depth and spacing.
  • The hairspring terminal curve should show hand-forming; a flat, perfectly circular terminal is a machine-wound spring, not the hand-made spring the watch promises.
  • Provenance documentation is the authentication layer here: original purchase papers from Greubel Forsey, correspondence, and service history are expected to accompany a piece at this level.
