Authentication

Verify 39mm case diameter and Heuer 02 column-wheel through caseback; distinguish from larger 42mm Carrera variants.

Known issues in the market
  • The 39mm and 42mm Carrera share similar dial layouts but have different lug configurations.
  • Heuer 02 fakes may substitute ETA Valjoux 7750 or clone movements.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 39mm Carrera Chronograph (CBN2010) is the compact heir to the original 1963 Carrera. The Heuer 02 caliber inside gives it the same column-wheel column-wheel chronograph architecture as the Monaco, verifiable through the caseback. The pump pushers are flush to the case -- a defining detail of the 39mm format that distinguishes it from older Carrera generations with protruding pushers.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replicas based on ETA 7750 tooling placed in a Carrera-style case.

  • Cam-switching lever visible through the caseback instead of a column wheel
  • Pushers with a different diameter or protruding profile
  • Applied "Carrera" text with incorrect font weight or letter spacing
LOW

Older Carrera Heuer 01 or Heuer 02 variants (different case size or generation) misrepresented as the 39mm CBN2010.

  • Case diameter inconsistent with 39mm -- the older Carrera generations were 41 or 44mm
  • Pusher profile different from the flush integrated design of the 39mm case

Prior Carrera generations are legitimate; the concern is accurate generational identification.

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2023 to present (silver/panda)Silver "panda" dial with black sub-registers. A nod to the original 1963 Carrera color scheme. Applied "Carrera" text.
  • Silver sunburst dial with black sub-registers at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock
  • Applied "Carrera" text in the correct font weight for the 2023 generation
  • Flush pump pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock integrated into the round case profile
  • Glassbox sapphire crystal with a distinct domed profile
2023 to present (black/reverse panda)Black dial with silver sub-registers. The reverse panda configuration, equally correct for this reference.
  • Black dial with silver sub-registers
  • Applied indices at 12, 3, 6, and 9 with correct proportions for the 39mm case
  • Glassbox crystal profile consistent across all 2023 Carrera 39mm variants

Service part flags

toggle
Heuer 02 movement

Original: Cal. Heuer 02 in-house automatic chronograph, column-wheel, 28,800bph, 80-hour power reserve. The CBN2010 uses the same caliber as the Monaco Heuer 02. The exhibition caseback shows the column wheel and rotor.

Replacement tells
  • No column wheel visible through the caseback -- an ETA 7750 base will show a cam-switching mechanism instead
  • Power reserve depleting in under 48 hours from full wind
  • Rotor with a generic sector profile rather than the Heuer 02 integrated winding mass
Glassbox sapphire crystal

Original: The 39mm Carrera uses a glassbox (domed) sapphire crystal. The domed profile is a deliberate vintage reference. The crystal should have no visible scratches and the Rolex-style convex curvature is not present; the TAG dome has a lower, more gradual arc.

Replacement tells
  • Flat crystal where a domed profile should be -- aftermarket flat sapphire substitutions are common
  • Crystal with a dome profile inconsistent with the low gradual arc of the genuine glassbox
  • Mineral crystal (it will scratch with a steel tool; genuine sapphire does not)
Pump pushers

Original: The 39mm case has flush integrated pump pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock. They sit flush with the case band and require a deliberate press. They are round in cross-section but do not protrude beyond the case midband.

Replacement tells
  • Protruding pushers extending beyond the case band -- a sign of a different Carrera generation or a non-matching case
  • Pushers with wrong diameter or with visible aftermarket machining marks

Case back markings

toggle
2023 to present
  • Exhibition (sapphire) caseback with perimeter engraving identifying the reference and caliber
  • "HEUER 02" caliber designation on the rotor or movement decoration
  • Serial number on the case midband
  • "TAG HEUER CARRERA" on the perimeter ring

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. Heuer 02, 28,800bph, 80-hour power reserve. Same verification approach as the Monaco Heuer 02: timegrapher beat rate and power reserve confirmation are the fastest tests.
  • Vertical clutch: the chronograph seconds hand advances smoothly at start without the tick-back of a horizontal clutch.
  • Column wheel is directly visible through the caseback. It should step one position per pusher activation.
  • No locking crown -- the crown pulls to two positions only. Crown at position 1 corrects the date; position 2 sets the time.
