What it is

The Autavia name traces to Jack Heuer combining "automobile" and "aviation" in the early 1960s, when the case design served dashboard and cockpit use before it became a wrist watch. The modern reissue launched in 2017 following a fan vote that selected the Autavia case over competing Heuer designs, giving the relaunch real collector legitimacy. TAG introduced the Heuer 02 movement to the Autavia Chronograph line as the caliber matured, replacing outside movements and bringing genuine in-house manufacturing to the lineup.

The Heuer 02 itself debuted in 2017 and draws direct lineage from the Calibre 1887, with flyback added as the distinguishing upgrade over TAG's base chronograph calibers. Confirm the movement before buying. The Autavia family includes both Heuer 02 flyback references and Sellita-based three-hand models , they share a case family and similar dials but are entirely different watches at different price points. Look for "Heuer 02" or "flyback" explicitly in the listing; if neither appears, assume it is the simpler variant.

The 42mm case wears larger than the dimensions suggest due to the lug design, so try it on before committing if wrist size is a concern. Pre-owned examples should have box and papers confirmed, as grey market supply for this reference is healthy and some sellers conflate trim levels across the Autavia range.

Pre-owned trades at a discount, typically $3,500–4,500 for clean examples with papers, which makes the Heuer 02 flyback one of the better value propositions in in-house sports chronographs at that level.
