Market price
The 1815 Up/Down adds a power reserve to the pared-back 1815 family; secondary prices are firm because the combination of outsize date and reserve display is considered one of the most useful Lange complications.
Editorial estimate, 2026 Q2. Actual prices vary by condition, date, and box/papers status.

Authentication
The 1815 Up/Down is a clean, legible Lange reference with low counterfeit pressure; the Cal. L051.2 German silver three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing and the power-reserve arc at 3 are the authentication anchors.
- The 1815 name references Ferdinand Adolph Lange's birth year; Arabic numerals only on this reference (no applied indices); any dial with applied metal indices is the wrong dial.
- The outsize date is NOT present on the 1815 Up/Down; the outsize date is a different complication found on the Lange 1 family; a date aperture on the dial of a claimed 1815 Up/Down is incorrect.
- Cal. L051.2 German silver three-quarter plate is the correct movement; any Swiss-made or nickel-silver plated movement is incorrect.
- Power-reserve "Up/Down" arc at 3 o'clock is the defining feature of this reference; an 1815 without a power reserve indicator is the standard 1815 (not the Up/Down variant).
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| dial | Arabic numeral dial (no applied indices) | Printed Arabic numerals at all twelve positions; no applied metal index pieces; numerals in the specific Lange serif font; clean white or silver dial surface; "1815" text below 12 | Applied metal indices at any hour position (wrong dial style for 1815); any date aperture present; numerals in incorrect font or weight |
| dial | Power reserve arc at 3 o'clock | "Up/Down" power reserve arc indicator at 3 o'clock position; arc covers approximately 90-degree sector; pointer advances smoothly as power reserve depletes; "72H" marking at full-wind position | Missing power reserve indicator (indicates standard 1815, not Up/Down); power reserve arc at incorrect position; "72H" marking absent or at incorrect position |
| dial | Subsidiary seconds at 6 o'clock | Small subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock; seconds hand sweeps; no date complication at 3 o'clock; dial otherwise uncluttered | Date aperture at 3 o'clock (indicates a different movement or variant); seconds hand absent; any additional complication beyond power reserve and seconds |
| movement | Cal. L051.2 German silver three-quarter plate via caseback | Exhibition caseback shows warm grey-brown German silver three-quarter plate; Glashütte ribbing (parallel stripes) at consistent spacing; "A. LANGE & SÖHNE GLASHÜTTE I/SA" on movement; "CAL. L051.2" text; blued steel screws | Cool or white bridges (Swiss movement or nickel-silver substitutes); irregular Glashütte ribbing; Cal. L051.2 text absent; black or chrome screws instead of blued steel |
| movement | Blued steel screws | Thermally blued screws throughout the movement; vivid blue-violet color; uniform bluing across all screws; polished and beveled screw heads | Any screw without blue coloration; uneven bluing between screws; flat (unbeveled) screw head edges |
| case | 38.5mm case and yellow gold or white gold correctness | Case diameter approximately 38.5mm; ref. 234.026 is yellow gold; hallmarks ("750") on caseback; case shoulders crisp with no polish rounding | Case diameter under 37mm or over 40mm; missing gold hallmarks; rounded case shoulders indicating polishing; wrong metal (steel or silver in a claimed gold reference) |
- Alligator leather straps are the most commonly replaced component; Lange-issued replacement straps with the correct buckle maintain value.
- Service history from Lange or an authorized Lange service center is strongly advisable; Cal. L051.2 is a complex movement requiring specialist knowledge.
Authentication guide
The 1815 Up/Down pairs a traditional subsidiary seconds layout with a sector-style power reserve indicator. The clean two-register dial is one of the simplest in the Lange catalog and a strong gateway reference. Dial condition and movement finishing are the primary inspection points.
