Authentication

The QuickSwitch and SmartLink mechanisms must both function correctly; a non-functional QuickSwitch on a pre-purchase Santos needs immediate service.

Known issues in the market
  • QuickSwitch bracelet release mechanism can seize after wear; confirm it releases cleanly before purchase.
  • SmartLink bracelet size adjustment requires the provided Cartier pin tool; missing tool is a minor disclosure item.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The WSSA0061 is the current medium-size Santos in steel (35.1mm). It includes the QuickSwitch strap system and the Interchangeable Strap system. The exposed screws, QuickSwitch lugs, and the medium-case proportions distinguish it from the large 40mm Santos.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
HIGH RISK

The Santos in all sizes attracts reproduction activity. The medium Santos may be presented incorrectly as a large, or vice versa.

  • Case that measures 40mm rather than 35.1mm on a stated medium Santos
  • QuickSwitch mechanism absent on a stated current-generation WSSA0061
  • Exposed screws that are flat decorative elements rather than functional through-bolts with visible slots

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2020 to present (WSSA0061, medium steel)Silver opaline or white lacquer dial, Roman numerals, blued sword hands, date window between the IV and V.
  • Eight exposed screws on the square bezel -- same screw placement as the large Santos
  • Medium case: 35.1mm width; proportionally smaller than the WSSA0009 large 40mm
  • QuickSwitch lugs: push-button strap release mechanism at the lug ends
  • Date window at approximately 3 o'clock between the III/IV and the adjacent space
  • "Santos de Cartier" text on the dial
  • Integrated steel bracelet or leather strap with QuickSwitch attachment

Service part flags

toggle
Case size (medium vs. large)

Original: The medium Santos (WSSA0061) is noticeably smaller than the large Santos (WSSA0009). They share the same design language but the medium is 35.1mm vs. 40mm for the large. On the wrist, the difference is significant.

Replacement tells
  • Case that measures closer to 40mm rather than 35.1mm on a stated medium Santos
  • Dial text size that appears disproportionate to the case size -- if the text is identical in absolute size to a large Santos, the reference may be incorrectly identified
QuickSwitch system

Original: The QuickSwitch push-button mechanism is present at both lug ends. Pressing the button depresses a lever that releases the strap or bracelet without tools. The mechanism should operate smoothly and positively.

Replacement tells
  • Standard springbar lugs without the QuickSwitch button mechanism on a stated WSSA0061
  • QuickSwitch button that requires excessive force or that wobbles in the lug housing

Case back markings

toggle
2020 to present
  • Solid caseback with reference WSSA0061 and serial number
  • "CARTIER", "ACIER", water resistance
  • Cal. 1847 MC on documentation
  • "Swiss Made"

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 1847 MC automatic, same as other contemporary Cartier steel references. Solid caseback.
