The Patrimony in steel is relatively rare for Vacheron and is keenly sought by collectors who prefer an understated case material; white gold and platinum examples push well above this range.

Authentication

Maltese cross micro-rotor visible through the exhibition caseback is unique to the Cal. 2450 Q6 and authenticates the Patrimony 81180

Known issues in the market
  • Ultra-thin profile means the movement cannot accommodate a standard rotor; micro-rotor is correct
  • Dial simplicity means any printing imperfection is immediately visible under magnification
  • Vacheron Constantin's Maltese cross logo must appear on dial and movement signing

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather strap is standard; VC deployment clasp should carry Maltese cross marking.
  • Ultra-thin movements are service-sensitive; review service history if available.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The Patrimony 81180 is one of the thinnest automatic watches VC produces. Its simplicity means any non-original part stands out immediately. The Maltese cross appears on both the movement rotor and the deployant clasp and is the most reliable authenticity marker accessible without opening the watch.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Outright Patrimony 81180 replicas are uncommon given the specialist market. The greater risk is parts-mixing from serviced examples or incorrect dial swaps from other Patrimony variants.

  • Date window on a stated 81180 -- the no-date configuration is specific to this reference
  • Movement rotor without Maltese cross -- the definitive movement tell
  • Deployant clasp without Maltese cross on an otherwise correct example

Parts-mixing risk is more common than outright fakes at this tier. A Patrimony Contemporary (with date) dial swapped into an 81180 case is the most likely mixed-parts scenario.

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
Current production Patrimony 81180Single configuration: sunburst applied-index dial, no date, no complications, no clutter.
  • Sunburst radial dial finish -- the dial catches and reflects light evenly from center outward
  • Applied white gold baton indices with no luminous fill (this is a pure dress watch)
  • "Vacheron Constantin" text in the correct VC typeface
  • "Geneve" text beneath the brand name
  • No date window -- any aperture is incorrect for this reference
  • No sub-dials of any kind

Service part flags

toggle
Dial

Original: Sunburst silver or grey dial with applied baton indices in white gold. The sunburst finish radiates from the center pinion with consistent spoke-like lines that catch light as the watch tilts.

Replacement tells
  • Any aperture or complication feature visible -- the 81180 has nothing except hours and minutes on the dial
  • Applied indices with inconsistent height or spacing relative to the dial center
  • Sunburst finish that appears flat or uneven under directional light
  • Date window from a different Patrimony variant (the Patrimony Contemporary date version exists but is a different reference)
Movement rotor

Original: Cal. 2450 Q6 rotor features the Maltese cross in VC configuration. Visible through the exhibition caseback without opening the watch.

Replacement tells
  • Rotor without Maltese cross -- any Patrimony with a plain or differently decorated rotor has had the movement swapped
  • Rotor that is heavier or different in shape than the known Cal. 2450 Q6 layout
  • Exhibition caseback that shows a movement layout inconsistent with the 2450 Q6 (different bridge geometry)
Deployant clasp

Original: Leather strap with VC deployant clasp featuring the Maltese cross embossed or applied on the outer face. The clasp interior should show VC text and finishing consistent with the watch tier.

Replacement tells
  • Aftermarket buckle without the Maltese cross -- common on gray market examples where the original clasp has been replaced
  • Clasp with Maltese cross that has incorrect proportions or finish level (visible on closeup inspection)
  • Tang buckle in place of a deployant on a stated full-specification 81180

Case back markings

toggle
Current production
  • Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. 2450 Q6
  • Maltese cross visible on the movement rotor through the caseback
  • "Vacheron Constantin" and "Geneve" on the movement plate visible through the caseback
  • VC serial and reference numbers on the case band between the lugs
  • Hallmarks per metal: 750 for 18ct gold variants

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 2450 Q6 at 2.05mm height is among the thinnest automatic movements in production. Drop damage may not be externally visible but can result in bent bridges -- function testing including sustained rate measurement is the most reliable check.
  • Bidirectional automatic rotor should spin freely and smoothly. Any grinding or resistance indicates worn bearings -- a known wear item on ultra-thin automatics.
  • Cal. 2450 Q6 runs at 28,800bph. Rate accuracy should be within COSC-adjacent range for a well-serviced example. Significant deviation without recent service indicates worn pallets.
  • VC service intervals are typically 5 years for this caliber. A watch outside this window with no documented service is a consideration, not a disqualifier, but the buyer should price in service cost.
