Authentication

The Tutima Cal. 521 in-house movement is proprietary; any M2 Pioneer with an ETA movement through the caseback has had a non-genuine caliber installed.

Known issues in the market
  • Cal. 521 is in-house; an ETA movement through the caseback is a service replacement with a non-genuine caliber.
  • The Cal. 521 is developed to German military pilot standards; the movement architecture is distinctive.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The M2 Pioneer is Tutima's field watch built around the in-house Cal. 521, a Tutima-developed automatic with robust construction. The titanium case and ceramic bezel are the key material authentication points alongside the in-house movement.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

Not a known reproduction target. Primary risk is movement swaps or case material misrepresentation.

  • Steel case sold as titanium: pick-up weight test is the fastest check (titanium is noticeably lighter)
  • Non-in-house movement through caseback
  • Coated bezel scratching under normal handling

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2014 to presentBlack or grey dial with large Arabic numerals. Date at 3, day at 12 or integrated window. Titanium case at 43mm. Ceramic bezel without hour markers. Fabric or rubber strap.
  • "TUTIMA GLASHÜTTE" at 12, "MADE IN GERMANY" below
  • Large bold Arabic numerals with strong lume application
  • Day and date complication
  • Ceramic bezel with plain profile (no markings)
  • 43mm titanium case: significantly lighter than a same-size steel piece

Movement (Cal. 521)

Original: Tutima in-house automatic, 28,800bph, 42-hour power reserve. Robust construction for military pilot specification. Visible through caseback with Tutima rotor branding.

Replacement tells
  • Tutima rotor logo absent on the oscillating weight
  • Movement caliber designation not reading Cal. 521 through caseback
  • Power reserve below 38 hours from full wind
Ceramic bezel

Original: Solid ceramic bezel without mineral coating over metal. Ceramic is scratch-resistant and will not show marks from normal handling. Any visible scratch on the bezel top surface suggests a non-ceramic (coated) replacement.

Replacement tells
  • Visible surface scratches (ceramic does not scratch under normal conditions)
  • Bezel with a different color under chips at the edge (indicates coating over steel)

Case back markings

toggle
2014 to present
  • Reference 6451-01 or variant
  • "TUTIMA GLASHÜTTE" and address
  • Cal. 521 designation
  • Titanium case notation
  • 300M water resistance
  • Serial number

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 521 power reserve is 42 hours. Below 36 hours from a full wind indicates mainspring service.
  • Day and date complication should advance cleanly at midnight. Sluggish date advance or mid-day date creep suggests a worn date corrector.
