Authentication

Both chronograph pushers must return to fully extended position after each press; any pusher that does not return has a faulty return spring.

Known issues in the market

The Royale de Paris Chrono uses the Calibre Initial Chronograph, a cam-actuated modular chronograph developed with a Swiss manufacture partner. It is not the in-house Calibre Royal movement. The modular architecture means the chronograph module sits on top of a base caliber. Pusher action and sub-register behavior are the primary function checks.

Non-Pequignet chronograph movement in Royale de Paris case

  • Movement without "PEQUIGNET" designation on bridges through caseback
  • Sub-register hands that do not return to zero on reset
  • Pusher positions inconsistent with the 2 and 4 o'clock layout

Pequignet chronographs are not a counterfeiting target. Condition, service history, and correct function of the chronograph module are the practical pre-purchase concerns.

Chronograph module

Original: The Calibre Initial Chronograph is a modular design: the chronograph mechanism sits as a separate module on the base caliber. Cam-actuated control means the chronograph levers are controlled by shaped cams rather than a column wheel. The modular construction increases case thickness to 12.7mm.

Replacement tells
  • Case height measurably below 12mm -- the modular construction produces the 12.7mm profile; a thinner case indicates the module is absent
  • Column-wheel visible through caseback in a watch claimed to be cam-actuated
  • Pushers at 2 and 10 (the conventional column-wheel position) rather than 2 and 4
Pusher function

Original: Start/stop pusher at 2, reset pusher at 4. Cam-actuated operation means the reset engages only when the chronograph is stopped. Attempting to reset while running should produce either no response or a defined resistance.

Replacement tells
  • Reset that engages freely while the chronograph is running -- cam-actuated designs typically prevent or limit reset while running
  • Sub-register hands that do not fly back to zero on reset
  • Chronograph seconds hand that does not start instantly at pusher engagement
Movement base

Original: The Swiss manufacture base caliber under the chronograph module. Not the Calibre Royal; a co-developed base is used for the chrono application.

Replacement tells
  • Movement base without "PEQUIGNET" marking on the visible bridges through caseback
  • Any automatic rotor -- verify whether the Chrono version is automatic or manual-wind; the presence or absence of a rotor must match the specification

Movement tells

  • Chronograph reset should return all sub-register hands to their zero positions cleanly and simultaneously. Any lagging hand on reset indicates a worn cam or lever needs replacement.
  • Running accuracy with the chronograph engaged should not materially differ from accuracy with the chronograph stopped. Significant rate change with the chronograph running indicates friction in the chronograph module that needs service.
