Authentication

The moonphase disc is hand-painted; any inconsistency in the moon rendering or luminous treatment indicates a replaced disc.

Known issues in the market
  • The moonphase disc is hand-painted and must have the correct luminous moon rendering; replaced discs are detectable under magnification.
  • The annual calendar module (Cal. 324 with module 206) is a service item; incorrect date behavior indicates module service need.

dialAnnual calendar aperture synchronizationDay, date, month, and 24h apertures all synchronized; annual calendar advances correctly; requires correction only at March 1Any aperture out of sync; date advancing on incorrect days; calendar requiring correction more than once per year

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather strap is the standard configuration; Patek white gold clasp is correct for the 5396G.
  • Annual calendar modules are serviced as a unit; module replacement is legitimate but must be disclosed.
Expert resources: Patek Philippe authentication by serial number. Advance the calendar through February 28-29 of a leap year to verify perpetual accuracy. Observe moonphase disc under 10x loupe for hand-painting consistency. WatchUSeek Patek forum for 5396 complication verification.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The 5396G-014 is a white gold annual calendar with moonphase, blue sector dial, and Cal. 324 S QA LU. Annual calendar mechanisms require correct pusher layout to verify; the moonphase disc accuracy and sector dial printing are the primary visual authentication targets.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
MEDIUM

Replica annual calendar watches with generic moonphase modules, often with simplified calendar sub-registers and incorrect moonphase disc quality.

  • Moonphase disc with flat-printed stars rather than applied or three-dimensional star pieces
  • Sub-register text that is blurred or typographically inconsistent with Patek production
  • Exhibition caseback showing a generic automatic movement without the annual calendar architecture
  • Fewer than three recessed corrector pushers on the case flank

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2013 to present (blue sector dial)White gold case, blue sector dial divided into sub-registers for calendar displays.
  • Blue sector dial with three sub-registers: date (lower left), day (lower right), month (upper center)
  • Moonphase aperture at 6 o'clock with deep blue moonphase disc and applied gold stars
  • "Patek Philippe" and "Geneve" applied text in the upper dial sector
  • Applied dauphine hands in white gold
  • Applied indices with lume filling

Moonphase disc

Original: Deep blue moonphase disc with two moons and applied or painted gold stars. The disc advances incrementally. The moon depictions should be well-defined discs of the correct diameter at the aperture.

Replacement tells
  • Moonphase disc with flat-printed stars rather than applied three-dimensional star pieces
  • Moon disc color that is noticeably lighter or more turquoise than the deep Patek blue
  • Star arrangement that does not match the correct Patek constellation layout for this reference
Calendar sub-registers

Original: Three sub-registers for day, date, and month with printed text. The text within each sub-register should be consistently sized, evenly spaced, and correctly typeset.

Replacement tells
  • Sub-register text that appears blurred or offset under magnification
  • Sector dial color that differs between the three registers (should be consistent blue)
  • Day/month text that uses an incorrect typeface inconsistent with Patek production standards
Pushers

Original: Annual calendar corrector pushers recessed in the case flank, operated by a stylus. Correct positions: month corrector at 10, date corrector at 8, day corrector at 2.

Replacement tells
  • Missing corrector pusher positions on the case flank -- all three recessed correctors should be present
  • Pusher positions that do not match the known 5396G layout

Case back markings

toggle
2013 to present
  • Exhibition caseback displaying Cal. 324 S QA LU automatic movement
  • Annual calendar mechanism architecture visible through the caseback
  • "Patek Philippe" on the movement plate
  • Reference 5396G-014 and serial number on the case flank
  • 18K white gold hallmark

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 324 S QA LU is a self-winding movement with annual calendar and moonphase. The annual calendar correctly displays all months without adjustment, requiring only a single correction for February 28/29 each year.
  • The moonphase display has an accuracy of 24 hours in approximately 10 years -- a rate far better than generic moonphase mechanisms. A moonphase that requires correction more than once per year indicates a worn or replaced moonphase module.
  • Gyromax balance wheel with four gold adjustment weights. Free-sprung design confirmed by absence of regulator-spring contact with the hairspring.
  • Cotes de Geneve striping and polished chamfers across all bridges are the Geneva Seal finishing standard. Any coarse or machine-finished surface indicates a non-Patek movement.
  • Annual calendar mechanisms are complex; a movement showing consistent calendar errors on known months (e.g., months other than February) indicates worn corrector levers or detent mechanisms.
