Authentication

The Cal. 321 Speedmaster is a premium reissue of the original Moonwatch movement; Franken-watches with the historic 321 movement fitted to incorrect cases are the primary authentication concern.

Known issues in the market
  • Cal. 321 (Lemania-based, lateral clutch, column wheel) is historically significant and commands a premium; the movement has been sourced and fitted to incorrect case generations by gray-market sellers.
  • The 1957 trilogy case shape (40mm) is specific to this reissue; earlier Speedmaster cases or Speedy Tuesday cases are different and should not contain a 321 reissue movement.
  • Lateral clutch chronograph engagement produces no jump on the seconds hand at start; a jumping seconds hand on start indicates a different (cam-lever) clutch type.
  • The column wheel is signed and visible through the caseback; a non-signed or absent column wheel is incorrect.
  • This reference is premium priced; secondary market examples should have complete box and papers given relatively recent production.

  • NATO and leather straps are common secondary replacements; the original bracelet specification should be documented.

The 2020 cal. 321 reissue is Omega's recreation of the original column-wheel lateral-clutch chronograph using modern production. At 39.7mm it is smaller than the standard Moonwatch. The column wheel is the visible movement differentiator from cal. 861 -- confirm via caseback or watchmaker report.

Caliber 321 column wheel

Original: The cal. 321 uses a column wheel for chronograph control -- the signature element that distinguishes it from the cal. 861 (which uses a cam-lever system with no column wheel). The column wheel is visible as a ratchet-like wheel inside the movement when the caseback is open. Modern 321 recreation uses the same column-wheel architecture as the 1960s original.

Hesalite crystal

Original: The base steel cal. 321 uses hesalite (acrylic) crystal, consistent with the period Moonwatch specification. Acrylic scratches easily -- a perfect surface on a used example likely indicates a replacement.

Movement tells

  • Cal. 321 in the 2020 reissue has the same 18,000bph frequency as the 1960s original. The audible tick cadence is slower than the cal. 861 at 21,600bph. This is audible side by side.
  • Power reserve is 48 hours. The lateral clutch used in the 321 produces a characteristic feel when the chronograph engages -- slightly different from the vertical-clutch systems used in modern co-axial chronographs.
  • The column wheel should rotate by exactly one position each time the start/stop pusher is pressed. Any deviation from single-increment advance indicates a column wheel or detent issue.
