Authentication

Grey-market misrepresentation is the primary risk; the moon phase display and three-register layout are the key identification points.

Known issues in the market
  • Grey-market examples without original box and papers.
  • Moon phase display that has been serviced with incorrect moon disc (wrong star pattern or moon rendering).
  • Leather strap with worn or absent Longines signature stitching; strap condition affects overall presentation.
  • Three-register layout confused with two-register chronographs from the same collection.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather straps are the most commonly replaced component on Master Collection pieces; original Longines straps are preferred.
  • Moon phase discs can be replaced during service; verify the disc rendering matches original Longines specifications.
  • Chronograph movements require service every 7 to 10 years; service records from Longines or authorized watchmaker support authenticity.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The L687 is an ETA A08.L11-based column-wheel chronograph with full calendar and moonphase. The complication density on the dial is the reference point for authentication.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Master Collection Chronograph is not a primary reproduction target at its market price. The risk is incorrect servicing or parts mixing on the complex calendar mechanism.

  • Generic ETA moonphase disc instead of Longines-spec disc
  • Mismatched or non-Longines pusher profiles after case repair
  • Subdial register misalignment indicating a dial replacement

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2005 to presentMulti-register chronograph with day, date, moonphase, and subsidiary seconds
  • Silver, black, or blue dial with three subdials: running seconds (9), 30-minute (3), 12-hour (6)
  • Moonphase aperture at 6 o'clock integrated with hour counter
  • Day and date windows at 12 o'clock
  • Applied baton or Roman numerals depending on variant
  • Longines script signature below 12

Service part flags

toggle
Chronograph Pushers

Original: Round pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock, correct diameter, Longines-finished

Replacement tells
  • Rectangular or incorrect-profile pushers from a different case donor
  • Pushers that do not reset cleanly or feel spongy (worn column-wheel detent)
Dial

Original: Printed subdial registers with correct spacing; moonphase disc visible through aperture

Replacement tells
  • Moonphase disc with incorrect star/moon artwork (generic ETA discs differ from Longines spec)
  • Misaligned subdial printing: a common tell on replaced dials
  • Missing Longines text or incorrect font on any subdial
Moonphase Disc

Original: Blue or black disc with two moon reliefs, Longines-specified star field

Replacement tells
  • Generic ETA moonphase disc with different star density or moon shape
  • Disc with visible scratches from mishandling during service

Case back markings

toggle
2005 to present
  • Solid caseback with engraved reference and serial
  • Engraved caliber designation: L687 or Longines equivalent
  • Exhibition caseback optional on some variants; shows Geneva-striped bridges

Movement tells

toggle
  • The L687 column-wheel chronograph should engage and disengage cleanly with no cogging at the start of timing; rough engagement suggests worn or incorrectly adjusted column-wheel detent.
  • The moonphase disc advances once per lunar day; post-service, verify the disc advances correctly at the appropriate time and does not skip or stall.
  • Full calendar mechanisms require correct end-of-month adjustment; any watch with date jumping erratically is likely due for service or has a worn date-corrector spring.
  • The 28,800 bph beat rate is standard; a watch audibly running slower or faster than expected should be timed across all positions before purchase.
  • The rotor should wind bidirectionally and smoothly; a rotor that only winds in one direction (or not at all) indicates a worn pawl or reversing wheel.
