The city aperture is the thing to test. A Geographic sets its second time zone by place, not by hour offset, and the mechanism that does it is the hardest part of the watch to fake.

Known issues in the market
  • Master Control cases and dials are replicated; the Geographic complication generally is not. A watch where the city ring does not move in step with the second-time-zone subdial is not running a calibre 939.
  • The Master Control family shares one case and several dials. Date, Chronograph Calendar and Geographic look alike in a small photograph and are different watches with different movements.
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre also builds a Polaris Geographic. Same complication, different case and dial entirely, so match the reference rather than the word.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Straps and folding clasps are consumables; a genuine JLC buckle is worth confirming since it carries real value.
  • The 1000 Hours control is part of the Master Control story, so ask whether the watch still has its certificate.
