The Cal. 59210 movement finishing is the reason to buy this watch; substandard finishing through the caseback is a movement swap indicator.

Known issues in the market
  • The exhibition caseback showing Cal. 59210 is the primary purchase justification; any movement with different finishing or architecture is not Cal. 59210.
  • Winding tension must increase consistently through the full 8-day range; inconsistent tension means the movement needs service.

Common legitimate replacements
  • Alligator leather strap is the standard configuration; original IWC strap is preferred.
  • Cal. 59210 service requires an IWC-authorized watchmaker due to the 8-day barrel complexity.
Expert resources: IWC serial number verification. Observe the power reserve indicator through a full 8-day depletion cycle to verify accurate calibration. WatchUSeek IWC Portugieser forum for Cal. 59210 caseback photography comparison.

The IW510212 is the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days with Cal. 59215, a manual-wind movement with an 8-day power reserve and a power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock. The dial features a balance wheel visible through an aperture at 9 o'clock. This is one of the technically most interesting Portugieser references.

Known reproduction risks

MEDIUM

Replica Eight Days using automatic movements behind a faux manual-wind dial

  • The balance wheel aperture at 9 o'clock on replicas is often painted closed or shows an incorrect scale
  • The power reserve indicator on replicas often uses a 48-hour or generic scale rather than a calibrated day arc
  • Exhibition caseback will show a rotor if an automatic movement is present behind the dial

Dial variants by era

EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2002 to presentSilver or white enamel-finish dial with a power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock (7-day arc) and a balance wheel aperture at 9 o'clock. Blued steel hands and applied gold-tone Arabic numerals.
  • Power reserve arc indicator at 6 o'clock with 7-day arc scale
  • Balance wheel visible through a cut-out aperture at 9 o'clock
  • Manual-wind only; no automatic rotor
  • "PORTUGIESER" and "EIGHT DAYS" on the dial
  • No date window; the dial layout prioritizes the power reserve and balance display

Service part flags

toggle
Power reserve indicator

Original: The PR indicator is an integrated subdial at 6 o'clock calibrated in days (1 to 7+). When fully wound, the indicator hand should sit at the maximum position and descend over 8 days.

Replacement tells
  • A PR indicator that advances or retreats at the wrong rate (should track approximately one step per day)
  • A days indicator that does not match the "EIGHT DAYS" specification, such as a 48-hour indicator from a different IWC caliber

Case back markings

toggle
2002 to present
  • Exhibition caseback showing Cal. 59215
  • Engraved ring: IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN with reference IW510212 and serial
  • No soft iron cage (Portugieser family)
  • The movement visible through the caseback is a manual-wind architecture with no rotor; if a rotor is present, the movement is not Cal. 59215

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 59215 is hand-wound; there is no automatic rotor. Any automatic winding sound or visible rotor means the movement is not original.
  • Eight-day power reserve; count the days from full wind to run-down to verify.
  • The balance wheel should be visible through the dial aperture; if the aperture shows a closed or painted surface, the dial is aftermarket.
