The Cal. 59210 movement finishing is the reason to buy this watch; substandard finishing through the caseback is a movement swap indicator.
- The exhibition caseback showing Cal. 59210 is the primary purchase justification; any movement with different finishing or architecture is not Cal. 59210.
- Winding tension must increase consistently through the full 8-day range; inconsistent tension means the movement needs service.
| Area | What to check | What is correct | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| caseback | Cal. 59210 finishing quality | Cotes de Geneve on bridges; beveled edges; polished steel parts; movement architecture consistent with Cal. 59210 manual-wind 8-day | Absent or inconsistent finishing; unexpected movement architecture; any automatic rotor indicating movement swap |
| crown | 8-day manual winding feel | Winding resistance increases progressively from empty to full 8-day power reserve; smooth throughout range | Inconsistent or flat winding resistance; resistance does not increase toward full power reserve |
| dial | Power reserve indicator at 6 | Power reserve indicator correctly calibrated to 8-day range; hand position accurate relative to actual power state | Power reserve indicator that does not advance correctly; indicator not calibrated to 8-day range |
- Alligator leather strap is the standard configuration; original IWC strap is preferred.
- Cal. 59210 service requires an IWC-authorized watchmaker due to the 8-day barrel complexity.

The IW510212 is the Portugieser Hand-Wound Eight Days with Cal. 59215, a manual-wind movement with an 8-day power reserve and a power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock. The dial features a balance wheel visible through an aperture at 9 o'clock. This is one of the technically most interesting Portugieser references.
