Authentication

The key-crown winding mechanism must engage smoothly; slipping or binding on a discontinued reference means a Cartier service visit.

Known issues in the market
  • The Cle was discontinued in 2019; papers dated after 2019 warrant careful examination.
  • The key-crown winding mechanism can slip if the engagement pin wears; this requires factory service and is not field-repairable.

Common legitimate replacements
  • No practical aftermarket replacements for key-crown mechanism components; only Cartier service can repair.

Last reviewed June 2026

The Clé de Cartier is defined by its oval case and the D-shaped winding crown integrated into the right-side lug. The crown geometry -- a D-shaped metal crown rather than a round crown -- is the single fastest field tell for this reference.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Clé de Cartier is a low-reproduction-volume reference. The D-shaped crown mechanism is difficult and expensive to replicate correctly.

  • Round crown where the D-shaped integrated crown should be is an immediate disqualifier
  • Oval case that appears more circular or rectangular than the correctly proportioned Clé case

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2015 to present (WSCL0008 steel, current)Silvered or white dial with Roman numerals and a distinctive D-shaped crown at 3 o'clock integrated into the upper right lug.
  • Oval case: the case outline is genuinely oval, not round and not rectangular -- it is widest at the equator and tapers at top and bottom
  • D-shaped crown: the winding crown is a D-profile shape integrated into the right lug, not a round crown protruding from the case
  • "Clé de Cartier" text on the dial below 12 o'clock
  • "AUTOMATIC" text below the Clé text
  • Roman numerals in standard Cartier typeface, blued sword hands
  • Date window at approximately 3 o'clock within the dial arrangement

Service part flags

toggle
D-shaped crown (key-winding mechanism)

Original: The Clé's defining feature is the D-shaped crown integrated into the upper right case lug. The crown form is a lever that is pushed and rotated to wind the movement, mimicking a key-winding action. The crown body is polished and the D-profile is consistent across the crown face.

Replacement tells
  • Round crown in the standard position instead of the D-shaped integrated crown in the lug
  • D-crown that shows asymmetry in its profile, suggesting replacement with a non-original part
  • D-crown engagement mechanism that does not have a positive clicking feel when operated
Oval case geometry

Original: The Clé case is oval. Under any viewing angle, the case outline should be continuously curved with the widest point at the center and tapering symmetrically toward the lug ends.

Replacement tells
  • Case that appears to have flat sections at the top or bottom, making it look more rectangular than oval
  • Case asymmetry where one side of the oval is noticeably rounder than the other

Case back markings

toggle
2015 to present
  • Solid caseback with reference WSCL0008 and serial number
  • "CARTIER" and "ACIER" (steel) markings
  • Water resistance and "Swiss Made"
  • Cal. 1847 MC on documentation

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 1847 MC automatic, wound via the integrated D-crown mechanism rather than a standard round crown. The movement is the same as other contemporary Cartier steel references.
  • The key-winding mechanism has its own set of wear points. A correctly maintained Clé should wind smoothly with clear resistance progression; slipping or rough winding in the crown suggests wear in the winding mechanism.
