Royal Oak "Jumbo" Extra-Thin (50th Anniversary)

The 16202ST is Audemars Piguet's answer to decades of collector complaints: bring back the 39mm. Released in 2022 to mark the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary, it revives the exact case diameter of Gerald Genta's 1972 original and pairs it with the 7121, a movement developed specifically to match the original's 6.3mm case height. What it is

The 16202ST launched in 2022 as the 50th anniversary edition of the Royal Oak, replacing the 15202 as the "Jumbo" in the lineup. It runs the caliber 7121, an in-house thin automatic developed to hit the 8.1mm total case height that distinguishes the Jumbo from the bulkier 15500ST (41mm, cal. 4302). The ref ships exclusively in steel with a Grande Tapisserie dial in three colorways at launch: blue, silver, and white.

Unlike the 15400 and 15500 generations, the 16202 does not carry a date, which is the correct choice for a watch meant to honor the original. Production is ongoing but constrained; AP has not published allocation figures.

Buying notes

Verify the bracelet is original and all links are present: the integrated bracelet on the 16202 is specific to this reference, and replacement links are expensive and slow to source through AP. Check dial condition under bright light at an angle; the Grande Tapisserie pattern shows scratches and cleaning marks readily, and refinished dials are a known issue on pre-owned examples. Inspect the caseback for evidence of unauthorized opening, since the 7121 is a thin movement and amateur handling during a failed service or battery swap (yes, it happens) can cause real damage.

Confirm the crown screws down smoothly and that the signed crown is correct for the ref; non-original crowns appear on grey-market pieces. Finally, request full purchase documentation including AP warranty card with matching serial, since resale value is materially affected by papers.

Market read

The 16202 trades at a meaningful premium to retail, which sat around $28,000 USD at launch. Grey market prices have ranged from $38,000 to $55,000 depending on dial color and condition, with blue dials commanding the top of that range. The white dial is rarer and has fetched above $50,000 at auction in near-mint condition.

Premiums have compressed from the 2022 peak but have not collapsed; AP's allocation model keeps supply tight enough that street price consistently clears retail. Buyers should expect to pay at least 35% over retail on the secondary market for a clean, papered example.

Service expectations

The caliber 7121 is serviced exclusively by Audemars Piguet; no independent watchmaker should attempt a full service without factory parts and tooling, given the movement's thin architecture. AP recommends a service interval of approximately five years, with full service costs running $1,200 to $2,000 USD depending on what the movement needs. Factor that into your total cost of ownership, and confirm with any pre-owned seller when the last service was performed.
