Authentication

Low counterfeit risk; primary concern is dial colour and texture authenticity on grey-market examples.

Known issues in the market
  • Dial texture on fakes appears flat and uniform rather than showing the layered depth of the genuine Cocktail Time dial.
  • Applied hour markers on fakes are silver-toned rather than gold-toned, or lume fill is missing.
  • Grey-market examples with replaced dials from non-matching Presage references (wrong color or pattern).
  • Exhibition caseback not showing Cal. 4R35 (movement swaps from other Seiko budget lines).

Common legitimate replacements
  • Leather straps are commonly replaced; original Seiko strap should carry Seiko markings on the underside.
  • Exhibition caseback gaskets may need replacement after opening for service.

Authentication guide

Last reviewed June 2026

The SRPE17 "Mockingbird" has a silver-white textured dial inspired by a cocktail glass. Cal. 4R35 is the date-only variant of the 4R36. The textured dial surface is the authentication anchor: it should show dimensional depth under magnification, not a printed flat texture.

Known reproduction risks

toggle
LOW

The Cocktail Time series is occasionally replicated in budget markets, primarily because the distinctive dial is recognizable. Quality of the dial texture is the clearest differentiator.

  • Flat printed texture instead of a dimensionally textured dial surface
  • Applied indices that sink below the texture plane rather than sitting above it
  • Caseback with an incorrect reference number for the specific colorway

Dial variants by era

toggle
EraDescriptionIdentifiers
2019 to presentSilver-white textured dial with a light-catching surface inspired by the shimmer of a cocktail glass. The texture has a star or snowflake pattern visible under direct light.
  • Silver-white textured dial with dimensional depth visible at an angle
  • Applied silver-tone indices with no lume (dress orientation)
  • Date window at 3
  • "PRESAGE" and "AUTOMATIC" text; "COCKTAIL TIME" designation on some variants
  • Mineral crystal (correct for this reference)
  • Leather strap at retail

Service part flags

toggle
Dial

Original: The textured surface is applied, not printed. Under magnification the texture has raised elements that catch light at different angles. A flat printed texture is a non-original part.

Replacement tells
  • Texture that appears flat under magnification, suggesting a printed surface
  • Inconsistent texture pattern near the date window
  • Applied indices that are not flush with the textured surface
Hands

Original: Sword-style hands, polished, with no lume fill. Consistent with the dress dial that also has no lume on the indices.

Replacement tells
  • Hands with lume plots, inconsistent with the no-lume dress dial
  • Hands from a different Presage sub-line with incorrect width
Crown

Original: Push-pull crown at 3 o'clock. Fine knurling appropriate for a dress reference.

Replacement tells
  • Crown from a sport Seiko with coarser knurling
Crystal

Original: Mineral crystal. Correct for this reference; do not mistake for non-original.

Replacement tells
  • Sapphire crystal sold as original; this is an aftermarket modification

Case back markings

toggle
2019 to present
  • SRPE17J1 reference number
  • "50M" water resistance designation
  • "PRESAGE" designation
  • Cal. 4R35 designation
  • Seiko S logo

Movement tells

toggle
  • Cal. 4R35 at 21,600 bph; date-only (no day display). Hackable and manually windable.
  • Power reserve is 41 hours. The 4R35 shares the 4R36 architecture but omits the day wheel.
  • Any SRPE17 with a 4R36 (day and date) movement has a different caliber installed.
